His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Message on the Commemoration of the 1st Anniversary of September 11, 2001

The September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were deeply shocking and very sad. I regard such terrible destructive actions as acts of hatred, for violence is the result of destructive emotions. Events of this kind make clear that if we allow our human intelligence to be guided and controlled by negative emotions like hatred, the consequences are disastrous.

How to respond to such an attack is a very difficult question to answer. Of course, those who are dealing with the problem may know better, but I feel that careful consideration is necessary and that it is appropriate to respond to an act of violence by employing the principles of non-violence. This is of great importance. The attacks on the United States were shocking, but retaliation that involves the use of further violence may not be the best solution in the long run.

We must continue to develop a wider perspective, to think rationally and work to avert future disasters in a non-violent way. These issues concern the whole of humanity, not just one country. We should explore the use of non-violence as a long-term measure to control terrorism of every kind. We need a well-thought-out, coordinated long-term strategy. I believe there will always be conflicts and clash of ideas as long as human beings exist. This is natural. Therefore, we need an active method or approach to overcome such contradictions.

In today's reality the only way of resolving differences is through dialogue and compromise, through human understanding and humility. We need to appreciate that genuine peace comes about through mutual understanding, respect and trust. Problems within human society should be solved in a humanitarian way, for which non-violence provides the proper approach.

Terrorism cannot be overcome by the use of force because it does not address the complex underlying problems. In fact the use of force may not only fail to solve the problems, it may exacerbate them and frequently leaves destruction and suffering in its wake. Likewise, acts of terrorism, especially involving violence, only make matters worse. We must condemn terrorism not only because it involves violence but also because innocent people fall victims to senseless acts of terrorism such as what the world witnessed on September 11th.

Human conflicts do not arise out of the blue. They occur as a result of causes and conditions, many of which are within the protagonists' control. This is where leadership is important. It is the responsibility of leaders to decide when to act and when to practice restraint. In the case of a conflict it is important to take necessary preventative measures before the situation gets out of hand. Once the causes and conditions that lead to violent clashes have fully ripened and erupted, it is very difficult to control them and restore peace. Violence undoubtedly breeds more violence. If we instinctively retaliate when violence is done to us, what can we expect other than that our opponent to also feel justified retaliating. This is how violence escalates. Preventative measures and restraint must be observed at an earlier stage. Clearly leaders need to be alert, far-sighted and decisive.

In today's world expectations of war have changed. It is no longer realistic to expect that our enemy will be completely destroyed, or that victory will be total for us. Or, for that matter, can an enemy be considered absolute. We have seen many times that today's enemies are often tomorrow's allies, a clear indication that things are relative and very inter-related and inter-dependent. Our survival, our success, our progress, are very much related to others' well being. Therefore, we as well as our enemies are still very much interdependent. Whether we regard them as economic, ideological, or political enemies makes no difference to this. Their destruction has a destructive effect upon us. Thus, the very concept of war, which is not only a painful experience, but also contains the seeds of self-destruction, is no longer relevant.

Similarly, as the global economy evolves, ever nation becomes to a greater or lesser extent dependent on every other nation. The modern economy, like the environment, knows no boundaries. Even those countries openly hostile to one another must cooperate in their use of the world's resources. Often, for example, they will be dependent on the same rivers or other natural resources. And the more interdependent our economic relationships, the more interdependent must our political relationships become.

What we need today is education among individuals and nations, from small children up to political leaders to inculcate the idea that violence is counterproductive, that it is not a realistic way to solve problems, and that dialogue and understanding are the only realistic ways to resolve our difficulties.
The anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 provides us with a very good opportunity. There is a worldwide will to oppose terrorism. We can use this consensus to implement long-term preventative measures. This will ultimately be much more effective than taking dramatic and violent steps based on anger and other destructive emotions. The temptation to respond with violence is understandable but a more cautious approach will be more fruitful.

DAVID SPANGLER: Message from Inner Being

Over the past few days since the tragic destruction of the WTC, several folks have asked me to comment on the inner side of this event or wonderedif I had any particular insights into what has been happening on the innerrealms.

The truth is that for all of Tuesday and Wednesday, I was simply too caught up in the enormity of the tragedy to be able to tune in properly. I needed to process my own feelings. When I did try to journey inwardly into the situation, I encountered such a powerful maelstrom or cloud of psychic energy around it that all I could do was to enter it and hold a peaceful, loving center. Just as survivors of the WTC collapse have spoken of being enveloped in dust so thick and black that they couldn't even see their hands in front of their faces, so it was for me entering this cloud of emotion, thought, and energy. All I could experience within it was sorrow,grief, fear, and anger, and all I could do was simply be a point of holding and peace within it. I had little ability to see into the higher domains where some deeper information or insight might be available.

Late Wednesday afternoon, however, I was contacted by a being with whom I have had prior contacts and who appears to me to be one of many beings whose function is to nourish the ongoing evolution and well-being of this nation.

I suppose I think of this being as an agent of the Soul of America. Through this contact, a series of images and insights began to unfold for me, but it has taken me two days to get a good handle on the information, and chances are I will still be processing it for days to come. As the effect of this contact has deepened for me, it has also made it possible for me to journey into the situation and observe for myself some of the energies and forces at work.

Because of this I have two levels of information. One comes from an inner plane being and the second comes from my own observations working on the inner planes. I want to differentiate clearly between these two. Both draw on different capabilities. In the first case, the trustworthiness of the
information depends on my skills as a mediator and translator of another being's perceptions; in the second case, the trustworthiness depends on my abilities as an observer and is affected by my interpretation of what I have seen and my thoughts about its meaning. I have reasonably good trust in myself and in my skills in both instances, but you need to evaluate the information for yourselves, so you need to know what information is coming from what source.

In any event, as most of you know, information received using intuitive skills from the inner worlds or from inner beings is not to be given any
greater authority or weight than you would give to any other information, particularly when it comes from an ordinary, human source. It is still one
person's (or one being's) perspective, and you must receive it and evaluate it using the integrity and independence of your own thinking and feeling and the guideline of your own soul and spirit.

In this email, I will share what I received from my inner contact. In a later email I will share my own observations and thoughts.

What this being said and showed me could be translated in this way (understand that it takes me more words to express it than it did the being
to communicate with me!):

"What has taken place is an act of sacrifice and a gift given by the Soul of America to the world at large. To understand this, you must know two
things. The first is that whenever a death occurs, for whatever reason, whether peacefully or in violence, an energy of spirit is released. An incarnational portal is opened, just as it is at birth. This energy is neutral or perhaps I should say, unformed. It is a gift that flows between the worlds. What is shaped from this gift is up to those who receive it, as well as by the one whose death has released it. Think of this energy the way your biologists and doctors think of a stem cell: it is capable of being shaped and particularized in many ways.

When a death occurs peacefully or as an act of courage and sacrifice, or when the one dying does so in a loving or blessingful way, then this energy is given a spin in a certain direction and can be a source of blessing for others. It lends itself to being shaped in positive ways. If the death is
violent and hateful, a different spin is given, and this energy can more readily be shaped in hateful ways. However, this is not a rule, and even
hateful and violent deaths can generate an energy that will ultimately be shaped in loving, healing, or transformative ways.

Think of this energy as a kind of inheritance. It is a gift from the dead, a gift from the dying. It is a gift to life, even, you may say, a gift of
life that can add to and bless the lives of those who remain physically embodied. Not all inheritances are spent wisely or well, not all gifts are used with grace and blessing, but the gift itself is there nonetheless.

The giving of this gift is an act of soul and is automatic. It is really an act inherent in the boundary between your world and ours, a result of
crossing that boundary. To release this energy and to give this gift is not a conscious decision on the part of the one who has crossed the portal,but
someone who dies in a mindful and loving way will greatly add to this gift and turn it from an unconscious energy into a consciously positive one.

Also, if love is present in the last moments of physical life, even if the death is violent or as a result of hateful acts, this gift can emerge untainted by the hate that may have caused the killing. Many of those who died in this event did so with thoughts of love and courage. We can see this, and the importance of this cannot be underestimated. They have left a powerful gift of energy.

That is one matter. As you know, there is a resevoir of fear and pain, suffering and anger, hatred and separation in your world. Why this is so is
not of concern at this moment; suffice to say it is ancient in orgin and that all peoples contribute to it and have therefore a responsibility towards it. All people suffer from it, whatever nation they belong to. It is a human problem, not a national or tribal one.

In this event, the soul of America has acted in a sacrificial way to take on a portion of this energy and hopefully transmute it. It has been doing this
for some time, and in this event, some of that sacrifical activity has manifested itself into the physical. There are energies of hatred and
violence circling your world, so to speak, looking to land, and all nations, including your own, are contributing to this simply because people
contribute to it in millions of small and mindless ways. That this particular energy landed in your nation in this way was partly a matter of consequences returning for certain patterns and actions you have set into motion. You cannot avoid paying a price for your own acts of violence in the world.

But in spite of what many may say about America's responsibility, this action was not primarily one of retribution or of paying a price. It was an act of sacrifice, a deliberate taking on of a portion of the world's hatred and suffering because the soul of America has the capacity to receive this hatred and transmute it. This is not a test of whether or not you can do so; you have already done so. An energy of violence needed to be grounded and was going to land somewhere. The soul of this country took it on, knowing it could absorb this blow. An energy of love and courage has been released into the world. There will be changes and there will be blessings.

This has happened whatever the immediate response of your people and your government may be. If your reponse is one that recycles the hatred in acts of revenge, this does not mean you have failed a test, only that you have not yet achieved a place of inner confidence and courage in which you can trust in a spirit of love and healing. But you will reach that place eventually.

You must understand this. The Soul of America is far more than its government or any one group of people. Even if your government or members of your citizenry react with hatred and seek simple revenge, this does not mean that everyone reacts that way nor does it mean that a deepening of spirit has not taken place. For those whose desire to love, to forgive,to be peacemakers has been quickened by this event, let them extend this inclusionary, embracing spirit to their fellows, even to those who, in their own anger and pain, now seek revenge. The gift of this sacrifice can be received in many ways by people. For those who can receive it in a way that takes them into the deepest places of love and the celebration of the common spirit of humanity, and whose hearts can be opened to forgive, let them be grat eful, but they should not condemn those who will receive this gift in different ways. If your heart is broken and opened to love, this is a grace for you to embody, not a club for you to hold over your brother's or sister's heart.

The energy behind this event needed to be received by humanity, much as the energy in a storm needs to be discharged by lightning. It could have been much worse; its effects were greatly mitigated, in no small measure by the fact that it was taken on by this country. It is also true that even worse
acts of violence have been and are being contemplated. It is the hope of the Soul of America and of all of us who serve that great Being and serve this country from the realms of spirit that by taking on this event and the release of the energy behind it, as well as the release of the
transformative power of the sacrifical act, will greatly lessen or dissolve the potential of these worse acts.

Has America lost its protection from spirit? No. You are greatly protected. Bolts have formed that have never struck you and were diverted. This protection will not cease. But you are all in a stormy world. The charges of hatred and fear are strong in all countries, and these attract and form the bolts of violence that strike your world. If a bolt gets through, it is unfortunate, but you must think of all the bolts that did not.

I have spoken of this as a sacrifical act made by the Soul of America. Did those who were killed have any choice in the matter? What we see is that
many of those who perished had indeed made an agreement at a soul level to participate in this sacrificial act, to make it their portal for entry into
our world; others did not but were drawn into the event for a great many reasons personal to them and their destinies. They could not have avoided
it.

But many had not chosen this way to die nor were bound to the event by chains of attraction or consequence, and they were not touched, sometimes for miraculous reasons but mostly because of how the event actually unfolded in time and space. In any event, all who died were immediately embraced by the love that led the Soul of America to offer itself in this way, and their entry into our world was graced and blessed by this spirit.

But as I have described, all who died gave the gift of energy released by their dying. And in the opening of the portal so powerfully by the deaths of
so many, this gift of life from death, even though initiated by the hatred of a few, became a channel for an outpouring of the love that is at the heart
of America. It is, I know, a painful gift, but it is a gift nonetheless. It is for you who remain to take that gift and reshape your world with it. It is a precious thing, and it can remake your world. I bless you."

You have all responded beautifully in this time of great sorrow. You have joined together on the inner planes with other lightworkers and the beings
of light, you have lifted solar plexus responses such as fear and anger into your heart center, and you have been a source of light and love for those
around. Your individual responses have collectively created a wave of love that is greatly needed, and that will touch the heart centers of many with
new love and awakening.

During times such as these, enormous numbers of people are open to new ways of thinking, and are listening to the voice of their hearts and their
souls. The great loss that has occurred has given everyone a chance to reflect upon the purpose and meaning of their lives. It has impelled
millions to turn upward, reaffirm their belief in God/Goddess/All-That-Is, and feel their oneness with each other.

We see a humanity that is more united than ever before. Even if the unity experienced at this high level is for just a brief while, the joining
together that is now happening will have effects for years to come. Humanity is learning how to form a collective voice, and the inner
connections that are being formed during this time will be carried out with new actions, thoughts, organizations, choices, and decisions that will
change the course of history.

The group of souls who gave up their lives, and the loved ones they left behind, are part of a remarkable soul group. Take a moment to sense the
courage, love, and sacrifice this group of souls has made. Those souls who have passed on have given humanity an enormous opportunity to awaken their inner strength and the will to act with wisdom to bring about world peace and unity.

These are remarkable souls, and you will note in the stories you hear about them that they seemed to be special people known by their kindness,
willingness to help others, and by a certain light and radiance they possessed. These souls and their loved ones are being honored and blessed
by the loving thoughts of millions. Through their sacrifice, and through the prayers of millions, they will move to a new level of spiritual
awakening as souls. Those who are left behind will find many rewards of light, awakening, love, and spiritual progress coming to them out of this
great sacrifice that they are experiencing.

There are powerful energies of Divine Will that are pouring into the earth plane starting in the year 2000 and coming throughout this year. These are
the energies that destroy old thought forms, release illusions, and bring to the surface that which has been hidden. Dense, negative energies that have
been ignored and hidden are coming to the surface to be dealt with and negated.

This is the aspect of Divine Will that releases obstacles and assists people in finding the shortest path to the goal, which is unity with respect for
differences, guardianship of other life forms, and a humanity that can act collectively to create the highest good for all life.

The powerful waves of Divine Will are the carriers of Divine Love. A wave of Divine Love is flowing into humanity, and you can and will experience
this love and goodness being expressed in many new ways. The crystallized thoughts that have allowed hate and separatism to exist are being shattered, never again to be as strong. Do not underestimate the power of Divine Will and the transformation that is possible with Divine Love.

This has been called the year of the Great Decision, culminating with the full moon of October 2nd. This is the year you need to decide - are you
going to love and focus on your unity with others, or are you going to feel separate and focus on your differences? Are you going to listen to your
heart and do those things your heart has been calling to you to do? Are you willing to be a source of love and a beacon of light for those around?
During the full moon of October, we invite all of you to join us on the inner planes to unite as one voice to draw in and transmit waves of Divine
Love to humanity and to all life.

Caroline Myss in one of her books says that all problems with which people seek help from a therapist involve the first three chakras. That means the first or root chakra concerns itself with belonging to the family and the tribe and all the problems of conformity and loyalty that might bring.It also involves standing on one's own feet. The second chakra focuses on creativity or lack of it, money and sexual matters as well as romantic love. Whilst the third chakra is devoted to self esteem, confidence and integrity. When we move above the waist,however, things become more abstract. There is a hierarchy here. We move from the concrete to the abstract, from the gross physical to the metaphysical. It is a fact a journey that takes us from the base to God.

The fourth chakra confronts each of us with the challenge of unconditional love. The fifth takes us to the realm of non-judgement, forgiveness and the free choice. It invites us to submit and surrender to divine power. The sixth grasps truth and the power of thought and finally the seventh connects us to the Divine. The vibratory rate appears to become swifter the higher we climb.

Caroline goes on to suggest that those who principally inhabit the first three chakras are not prime candidates for alternative medicine. Theirs is the world of the allopathic. It is unlikely that homeopathy, vibrational medicine, energy healing etc will have much impact here. Note the studies that have been done for instance debunking aromatherapy come at best from this world. Remember, too, that the second chakra is the centre of control, and money and sometimes greed. Maybe such studies are not particularly honest and are used to debase the alternatives in order to protect the financial interests of pharmaceutical companies for instance. Time after time I have seen "experts" stand up and pour scorn on vitamin and mineral supplements, stating that a good diet is all that is required to remain healthy. Clearly many people believe this, but taking into account the sorry state of mineral depletion in soil and food production in general, this is just not true.

I have noted the same thing in clients.As a result I seem to work with fewer and fewer of them, and those that I do work with seldom stay.These are the people who want a magic pill for them to break their addictions, or save their dysfunctional relationships or keep them in high paying jobs that they clearly hate. All this needs to be achieved without anyone looking too deeply into the psyche.

Those operating from chakras below the waist are more likely to "pooh pooh"the energy psychologies, by stating that they can't see how tapping on a few points on their face and hands is possibly going to do them any good. Even if it does, they will rationalise this success, which is an excellent example of the Apex effect in action. Once they have experienced the success of these techniques they might be reluctant to tap themselves, even though they know the methods are effective.

At base I suspect most of our problems are spiritual by nature. Once we connect to a power greater than ourselves these problems simply resolve themselves.

That means that therapists are today's equivalent of priests. It amazes me how many people run gibbering off into the wilderness at the very mention of the "G" word. These are the very people who would greatly benefit with a connection to a power greater than themselves.

I appreciate that many of us live in a rarefied environment, and usually the focus is on the chakras above the waist. There is no longer any excuse, we know better. This is not a judgement, but simply a fact. It reminds me of growing up. Once I was fascinated by toy cars, and had a huge collection, then one day they just lost their fascination, and try as I could they no longer interested me. So what does that mean? Well we it means we have questioned our families and very often moved on in spite of opposition. Our loyalty to the company or the State is not blind. If we see wrongs we want them righted. It means we can no longer have purely sexual encounters. Gone are the one night stands, singles bars, gay bars, massage parlours and saunas. We see past the limitations of romantic love and seek something much more precious. A true heart to heart connection. We have all worked assiduously on our issues, and have resolved many of them. Thanks to EFT, TFT etc we all have a paradigm for dealing with stuff as it comes up, as it surely does. So we are less liable to stumble into the pitfalls of control issues and we are more likely to come from a place of high integrity with a handle on our own and the self worth of others. We struggle with judgements and thus become increasingly less judgemental which makes us more understanding and compassionate.We no longer find the tabloid press particularly interesting. Much of what appears on television seems crass, and second chakra package holidays to Ibiza seeking sun and sex have lost their appeal.We need more than a job, more than a career, yes, what we seek is a vocation.Like the toy cars, we outgrow things and people as we develop and become more discriminating. I'm not suggesting this is better than operating from below the waist, only different. It makes the world a rather lonely place, and it becomes more difficult to relate to more and more people.

All of that brings us to now, and the events post 9/11/. Yes, a dreadful thing happened on that day. The loss of life was quite unforgivable.The taking of human life has no place in the chakras above the waist Yet, it happened. What has happened since, has also been quite unforgivable from the perspective of those who operate from above the waist. Can we truly sanction a war which involves carpet bombing Afghanistan, especially as it is conducted by the most powerful nation on earth? Can we sanction Israel's bloody aggression in Palestine? "An eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" comes from the old testament and is certainly a first chakra issue. So too is law and order. These views do not fit in with responses expected of us by the Western Nations. They might be considered "unpatriotic", which again is a first chakra issue . But folks, that's not what scares me. As the Western media has fixated on the bombing in Afghanistan and anthrax scares in the US other things have been happening, form which attention has been deflected.

I can't for one second believe that Boeing and British Airways could possibly have come up with such huge redundancy plans just on short week after the attacks in the continental USA. They and countless other companies have used September 11th as an excuse to push forward rationalisation plans which would have been deeply resisted by the trade unions if it were not for the terrorist attacks.

Look at the legislation which has been pushed through the House of Representatives and Senate in the USA. Corporate America has pulled off a coup of gigantic proportions. Bills supported by the White House have been rushed through to limit personal freedom, to grant huge concessions to major corporations who have walked away with billions of dollars. To introduce tax incentives which enable these corporations to operate tax free in the US and set up overseas tax free status.The oil companies seem to be doing particularly well. Already the wonderful Alaskan National Park has been despoiled, and now they are talking about oil from the Arctic.Oil plays a huge part in all of this. America produces 3% of the world's oil and yet consumes 25%. One of the reasons Iran calls America "the great Satan" is the fact that it has worked to keep oil prices down, despite the wishes of countries like Iran who require the revenue for their own development.

In Britian detention centres have been set up for asylum seekers, and the Government has issued the asylum seekers with identify cards.Nobody is opposing this because a) the media has them looking the other way and b) it is considered disloyal to question the government in time of war.

Another question from above the waist, Does anybody in the West really understand Arab/Islamic culture? I spent ten years in the Arab World, and prided myself on my reputation of being able to get on with the locals.Yes, we often had "spats", and it is considered a huge loss of honour to lose face in such situations. I discovered a nifty way around this, because consequences could be quite dire. I learned that if I apologised first, I got the other person off the hook and they were always very grateful. As a result we became firm friends. The Taliban has been making overtures for some time now, but they are always rejected. Bush will not negotiate, he simply wants Bin Laden. That's not how Islamic people work. I am certain throwing the Taliban a life line would be much more successful than bombing the bombed out ruin that is Afghanistan. That is unless something else is going on anyway.

What is happening in Israel is all together another matter. Tourist Minister Zeevi was assassinated and led to hideous incursions into Palestine.It is curious he had also resigned his post before the killing. Yesterday Yasser Arafat suggested that Israeli intelligence had a part to play in the killing.

So what's is this all about. What am I saying? If we are to look at other aspects of life from the perspective of the chakras, then we need to do the same with the political events of the world today. The media view comes from below the waist, as do the politicians and for that matter the terrorists. Or do they? All this is being done in the name of God, but that applies to both sides. What do we se when we move to a higher perspective? Can we possibly go along with all or any of this?

It takes tremendous idealism to capture a jetliner, and then crash it into a city building---killing yourself and everyone on board. This is insanity, and no one will dispute that. It is TERRORISM.

However, it also takes tremendous idealism for a person of means to brashly spend money on elaborate pleasure boats and cars when there are children racked by disease---starving daily in cities and nations all around him. The mental state of this latter type of person produces what we call a TERRORIST SITUATION. In order to support and defend your ideology of "I am not my brother's keeper," in all its modern forms, a person must choose to DESTROY certain neurons in his brain that could connect his consciousness to the cries of despair and serious need that rise up all around him. It is murder by omission, and the person you kill is always YOURSELF.

There will always be "sides" and struggles. It is the nature of things. The Montagues have been warring with the Capulets all across time.
