This book review starts with the disclosure that I am not an unbiased reviewer, having known Daniel Benor, MD, personally and professionally for many years. But that’s not why this review is so positive. Dr. Benor has written a very important book. I have long admired his scholarly work in assembling an encyclopedic, 4-volume collection of research on energy healing, psychic phenomena, and other such boundary-stretching topics. But I did not fully realize until reviewing this book that, in addition to being a noted researcher, editor, and teacher, he is also a gifted clinician. Seven Minutes to Natural Pain Release is an important synthesis of his clinical work and his research endeavors, focusing on the notoriously challenging syndrome of chronic pain.
Mind-body medicine practitioners have long known that chronic pain is the archetypal disease for illustrating the connection between mind and body. Chronic pain clinics have been the breeding grounds for many of the most important breakthroughs in the field of mind-body medicine and have featured the use of multidisciplinary teams, with the focus on self-management and empowerment rather than clinician dominance. They also led to early acceptance of now-established techniques like meditation, hypnosis, and biofeedback. However, an important ingredient has been missing from many of these approached to chronic pain, and Dr. Benor’s book helps provide the key – explaining the emerging field of energy psychology (EP).
In traditional Chinese medicine, life energy (or qi) is understood as the link between mind and body. In Dr. Benor’s expanded model of energy psychology, this vital force becomes the bridge between thoughts, emotions, body, and spirit. He’s developed a simple technique that works on all these levels, and this book is a primer for its use. His technique is called WHEE, the acronym used to describe the Wholistic Hybrid of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). The latter 2 are the 2 best known energy psychology techniques. WHEE is a distillation of Dr Benor’s 40+ years of experience in holistic medicine. His book provides an easy-to-understand outline of what too often is presented as an esoteric topic, and the book is further sharpened by his focus on pain management as the single clinical issue of concern.
Dr. Benor offers several dozen vivid clinical vignettes to illustrate key points, and, as the story unfolds, the picture he paints becomes all the more compelling. Furthermore, his willingness to describe how he has used these techniques to facilitate his own inner growth is inspiring and clearly illustrates the importance of putting into practice the somewhat clichéd notion of healing the healer. Best of all, the techniques are presented in such a way that the reader is drawn into self-experimentation, the most powerful way to experience the unusual impact of deceptively simple energy therapies like WHEE.
The array of topics covered in this book is large, ranging from more traditional (and popular) psychological approaches like inner-child work and transactional analysis to the science of psychoneuroimmunology and the research basis of EP. The section on how to implement WHEE is particularly thorough and highlights the pitfalls most likely to be encountered by the beginning practitioner. Dr Benor utilizes the notion of pain as feedback from the unconscious mind to show how we can learn from pain and trigger our personal growth. He even makes bridges to such potentially controversial topics as past-life memories, group consciousness, and surrogate healing with a form of open enquiry that unfolds naturally and effectively. I particularly appreciated his chapter on using EP to connect with one’s own personal spirituality, a section that included such provocative topics as “Death Has a Bad Reputation,” “The Pain Body,” “Love and Compassion,” and “Forgiveness.”
I do have a few caveats. The book is quite text-heavy and would have benefited from more diagrams and illustrations of various modifications of the techniques and the different ways they can be implemented, as well as depictions of the energy mechanisms that are thought to be involved in their action. Perhaps an MRI image or 2 could have been included to illustrate the known impact of energy psychology techniques on brain function.
Clinically, there could have been a clearer breakdown of patients according to their specific diagnostic category. His vignette subjects were typically described as having general conditions like fibromyalgia or chronic pain of a certain limb. More specific diagnostic labeling would have been useful, especially since different pain syndromes-such as myofascial pain, complex regional pain disorder, and phantom pain-seem to be associated with specific types of energy blockages.
Last, I found the book’s cover design a bit distracting in its use of 6 different fonts for the title alone, but obviously this is only a trivial quibble about a very important book.
I’ll finish this review with 2 final comments: first, I now teach WHEE to all my patients in the pain management program where I work; second, I wish that I had written this book!

Daniel Benor, MD is a wholistic psychiatrist who developed WHEE.
WHEE stands for Whole Health Easily & Effectively. It incorporates
two methods used in psychotherapy: Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Professional
psychotherapists will most likely recognize these terms; the lay person
can learn about them in this book.
WHEE is a method that provides fast relief of both psychological and
physical pain. It helps you get to the root of the pain by identifying
the emotional issues that helped to create it and to gain an
understanding about why we are experiencing it. We tend to create
emotional blocks as a way to bury feelings that we think we can’t
handle. Physical pain often develops in our muscles and joints as a
result of this. By identifying the blocks or resistances that are
surrounding the pain, you can release it. Letting go helps you to be
able to move on from the psychological issues that were binding you to
the pain.
Dr. Benor observes, “Pain is often a message from our inner self,
spoken through the symptoms of our body.” WHEE is described as
wholistic because it takes into account all of the aspects that
complete a person, including mind, body, spirit, emotions and
relationships. For some people, some of the issues that are dealt with
involve past life experiences and healing relationship issues with
people who have passed on.
Who can benefit from WHEE? People who are experiencing either physical
or emotional pain from health issues such as: fibromyalgia, PTSD,
cravings, depression, irritable bowel syndrome and headaches. WHEE is
simple and easy to learn. It takes less time than traditional therapy.
As a matter of fact, WHEE was developed as a result of time limitations
that have been imposed upon psychotherapists with their patients.
Today, with so many insurance companies only willing to pay for brief
therapy, WHEE is incredibly important. It is also something that people
can use to help themselves outside of the therapist’s office.
As a person with fibromyalgia it is a relief knowing a doctor
recognizes that it is a real health issue. It is also wonderful to know
that a simple treatment exists that can help me heal from it, without
having to resort to medications. I am sure that other readers will also
feel this way in regards to whatever health issues they are facing.
I really enjoyed reading “Seven Minutes to Natural Pain Release.” Dr.
Benor writes with such understanding and compassion. He also offers a
glossary and in-depth explanations so that a layperson will have no
problems understanding any of the subjects offered. I highly recommend
this book to those who want to heal themselves from pain without
medications and raise themselves to higher spiritual levels, and to the
therapists who help them to heal.

Finally available, this is a book you don’t want to miss - direct to the point, step by step instructions.
The title says it all. Dr Benor has applied his hybrid WHEE technique to pain management with spectacular results, obtaining glowing endorsements from luminaries as Larry Dossey MD, Bernie Siegel MD and Norman Shealy MD.
Excerpts from the books presentation on Dr Benor's Website: (Physicians)…"discovered that addressing underlying emotional traumas often leads to the rapid and permanent alleviation of pain. When emotional pain is cleared, physical pain often dissipates too."
WHEE is one of the new therapies called Energy Psychology. WHEE changes a person's consciousness and bioelectromagnetic energy system and facilitates the healing of physical problems. The changes produced by WHEE often result in rapid and painless healing on all levels of a person's being. It's hard to believe that so much relief is possible so quickly. Dr Benor gently yet thoroughly guides the reader through a process of self-discovery.
Readers find the blocks that are causing their pain, and use the simple self-treatments of WHEE to shift those blocks. For adults and children with acute and chronic pain, 7 Minutes to Natural Pain Release is a godsend. More importantly, the personal growth that results from emotional healing leaves us with a legacy of happiness that lasts long after the pain has gone.

Having
suffered from Fibromyalgia for over a decade, I’ve come to realize that
contemporary medicine tends to focus specially on symptom relief. Have
a headache, take a pill type mentality. Instant gratification. It’s
wonderful, when it works but when it doesn’t this type of thinking
really leaves the sufferer with few alternatives.
Alternative
medicine tends to focus on the root cause of any health condition. It
makes sense, you can take a pill to get rid of your headache but until
you actually fix the problem that caused the headache in the first
place, you’ll find that you’ll keep getting headaches. Essentially,
find out why you had the headache in the first place, fix that, and the
pain will be gone permanently.
The therapy set out
in Seven Minutes to Natural Pain Release combines two very important
processes. First, there is the tapping which serves as a physical way
of reminding ourselves to make healthier decisions. This method is
commonly used to reduce stress, increase focus, or to quit smoking. In
and of itself, it can be a powerful tool for replacing unhealthy
habits.
Then, there is belief work which focuses on
understanding the unconscious beliefs that we hold about a given
situation, releasing the unhealthy notion, and replacing the old belief
with a healthier option. This is the part of the process that makes the
results happen so quickly. So often, it is our negative thinking or our
unconscious blockages that hold us back. This concept is easily
translated to chronic pain.

Millions of people suffer from chronic pain. Wholistic psychiarist and author, Dr. Benor, developed the WHEE method of painless healing for chronic pain relief. The method has a money back guarantee, and claims only one return in six years. The book takes the reader through self-discovery to removing emotional blocks for long-term healing.
Noteworthy: The amazing book details how people develop pain, the role pain serves and how to choose to let pain go or keep the symptoms. Another benefit of the WHEE method is personal growth generated by self-discovery. The method is unique in that it encompasses the physical, emotional, unconscious, and spiritual dimensions. “Seven Minutes to Natural Pain Release” by Daniel J. Benor, M.D., details the self-healing method of WHEE. The author himself developed this method combining, elements from both EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). By combining the two methods, Benor has developed an approach that is simple, effective, and takes little time.
“Seven Minutes to Natural Pain Release” begins with an introduction on the basic aspects of the WHEE approach. Then, Dr. Benor presents information allowing us to better understand pain, and addresses the psychological factors involved in pain. After establishing this basic foundation, he goes on to elaborate on the WHEE method in detail, including a section on theories to explain why WHEE is effective.
The approach is extremely simple and pretty much anyone would be able to perform it. It is also safe and you can do it on yourself at home. Pain relief doesn’t get much better than that!
The case studies for the effectiveness of the method are truly remarkable. For instance, “In a WHEE workshop in Mexico, a woman asked for help with her arthritis. Her hands were so affected that she had not been able to bend any of her fingers for many months. We did an experiment, having her focus the WHEE on her right index finger. Within minutes, she was able to bend that finger but not any of the others.” (p.27)
One of my grandmothers has arthritis and I think that by using the techniques in this book she may find some relief. One of the most intriguing aspects of the WHEE approach to me is that the time involved in the process is so minimal. As you can see from the story about the woman in Mexico, the results are almost instantaneous.
