Research: Reading through their fingers

Editor's MusingsIntuition
Daniel J. Benor, MD
Intuition is the inner knowing that comes without outer sensory stimuli. It is the modality that senses most deeply, yet one that our society has valued least. We invest most of our efforts in educating our children to use their outer senses, ignoring and even denigrating the inner ones.
ResearchFinger-reading: Exploring the Information Field
Si-Chen Lee, PhD(1), Daren Tang(2), Chien-Te Chen(3) and Shih-Chin Fang(4)
Some people are able to read images by using their fingers rather than their eyes. After nine years of investigation, we confirmed that children between 6 and 13 years old can be trained in finger-reading. An earlier report suggested that finger reading can be developed in a high percent of children (~40%) with training (S. L. Chen et al 1989). More than 21% of the children in our studies developed statistically significant finger-reading capability (p < 0.05) after attending finger-reading training classes for two hours daily over four days.
Healing ApproachesPsychic Healing and the Anisotropic Universe
by Barbara G. Koopman, MD, PhD and Richard A. Blasband, MD
Drawing on his training in advanced physics and quantum theory, together with an in-depth questioning of the latters' known inconsistencies, physicist/psychic healer Nicolai Levashov has concluded that the universe is anisotropic, i.e., non-uniform in spatial structure.
This concept, while backed by serious support in the field of astrophysics, runs directly counter to the classical view that the structure of space is uniform (isotropic) - which holds that space has the same qualities and properties in all directions and therefore matter must manifest similarly in all directions of space.
Studies with Nicolai Levashov
Richard A. Blasband, MD
I first consulted Nicolai for my chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in 1994. This had been diagnosed by two medical homeopaths who were expert with a variation of the Voll diagnostic device. They had each, independently, found inflammatory pathology in the same major organ systems: the heart, lungs, liver, and prostate. Pathologic structural changes in the heart were demonstrated by electrocardiogram. Although I did not inform him of these findings, other than my fatigue, Nicolai made the same diagnoses within 10 minutes during his initial examination.

A year following my car accident, I continued to experience daily, debilitating pain in my back, neck, arms and hands. Because this puzzled my Chiropractor, even though we were doing everything we could, I'd begun to sense that there was another component to the pain I experienced. On an energetic level, as well as emotional, there were some things I needed to address in order to release my body for healing. The techniques that Judy told me about seemed a good place to start.
Wholistic ApproachesDoctoring as a Human Experience: On Developing a Healing Partnership Caring for the Human Spirit, the Patient's Soul
Ronald Banner, MD
In "Patients' experiences" (Banner 2001), we considered the process (stages) of becoming a patient, that suffering is much more than pain, and recognized the subjectivity of decision making by patients. All these point up the need for inputs from patients. They should be our advisors/ counselors/ teachers - these people who have experienced illness and who understand their experiences. These advisors are essential in understanding and improving patient care, as well as in medical education, policy development and research (Reiser 1993). I illustrate the notions presented in this article with the experiences I shared with a patient named Stanley, who had severe and complex illnesses.

Volunteering ServicesUnfiltered Humanity: Reflections from Peru July 12, 2000
Nivedita Mohanty - Second Year Medical Student
Before beginning medical school, I chose to explore parts of South America in the capacity of a servant to issues that moved my soul to action. Projects that commanded my pro-active stance were: environmental conservation, preservation of indigenous cultures, and healthcare in the developing world. I volunteered in conservation efforts in an inter-Andean forest in Ecuador, for an organization promoting protection of indigenous peoples of the Amazon, and at a children¹s rehabilitation clinic in Peru. After months of travel, I returned to my world of familiars deeply touched by these aspects of our global society and the magical people and landscapes impacted by their broad reach. I returned amazed at the diversity of our planet and empowered by the tenacity of human bonds. The humble words I share here came from a journal excerpt sent via electronic lines from Peru to my loved ones.

Research and Healing Through the Creative ArtsProprioception, Reflection, Recognition: The Positive Affect of Paradigmatic Form
Gilah Yelin Hirsch, MFA
Over a period of thirty years, I have developed a series of conjectures showing consonance between forms of fundamental physiological systems and perceptual patterns affecting physical and emotional health, behavior and culture. These investigations have led me to believe that aspects of consciousness are hard-wired in our physiological bodies, and that the focus of consciousness clearly points toward behavior benefiting the greater good. My hypotheses have been based on my own experience, realized as metaphor assumed imagery in my paintings. My ideas were corroborated in the external world as I discovered their reflection and resonance in ritual and practice of the many cultures I have both lived in and visited. I have come to trust intuition, particularly as it has been found and expressed in imagery that is related to the body.
