    HEALINGS WITH MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

A Stitch in the Time-Space Continuum - Deena Zalkind Spear

    Editor's Musings

Darkness and Light: Perspectives on the Yin Yan Symbol
    Daniel J. Benor, MD
In the middle of winter, with the darkness of night longer than the light of day, our inner selves mirror the world outside and we are given to brooding over dark and sometimes negative thoughts.

While most of us are not happy when dark clouds of negative thoughts and moods cross - or even cover completely - the skies of our awareness, and some become downright cross or even seriously depressed, with a shift in focus the darkness can often be experienced as the good teacher it is, because darkness is necessary in order for us to appreciate light.

Nutrient Synergy and Complexity Theory: A New Paradigm?
    Annemarie Colbin, PhD
    A new paradigm?

This paper suggests that there is need for an amplified paradigm in nutrition, going beyond biochemistry, to accommodate new research on the effects of whole foods and complex dietary systems. It offers a brief history of nutrition science, an overview of successful applications of the reigning nutritional paradigm and a rationale for a paradigm expansion. It is suggested that complexity theory can offer the theoretical framework for such an expansion. As an example, the author offers examples for applying complexity theory to understanding food and the human body as complex adaptive systems, rather than mechanical constructs. Complexity theory brings strength to concepts such as whole foods, food synergy, and nutrient synergy. Examples are given for practical applications of the paradigm.

Fields and Energies Related to Healing: A Review of Soviet and Western Studies
    Daniel J. Benor, MD
    Evidence for the biofield

Abundant research has been done to confirm the existence of spiritual healing in numerous controlled studies... How spiritual healing occurs is as as yet a controversial question.

This paper reviews evidence suggesting that biological fields and energies may be involved in spiritual healing, and based on this assumption presents speculations on how healing works...

Where does the Yin Yan Symbol Come From?
    Allan Tsai
There is a well-known Chinese Yin Yang symbol. Sometimes it's called Tai-Chi symbol. The Tai-Chi is from I-Ching. The I-Ching is the greatest foundation of Chinese philosophy. It's development is from the natural phenomena of our universe. Because I-Ching comes from nature, it should be easy.

What Really Happened? A Forensice Pathologist's Perspective on Immortality and Living
    Janis Amatuzio, MD
The subject of Healing is not a common one for a forensic pathologist, who usually speaks for the dead. Truth and nothing but the truth is the common thread. In my practice as a County Coroner, my job is to explain “What Happened” to family members, police and the courts if necessary. The question is answered by examining the death scene, the circumstances surrounding the death, the medical and social history, and finally by performing an autopsy when indicated.

To arrive at the truth about what really happened, I teach my death investigators the distinction between making observations as opposed to rushing to judgment. “Things are not always as they seem,” I say. A death from carbon monoxide poisoning in a passenger vehicle may be accidental due to a leaky exhaust or may be intentional by alteration of the muffler and exhaust system to cause asphyxia. “Gather information, document the scene, follow the guidelines and trust that you will arrive at the truth.”

A Stitch in the Time-Space Continuum: Teaching Telepathic Sound Tuning and Healing
    Deena Zalkind Spear
Distant influence improves musical instruments and heals living beings

I swore my clients to secrecy about my unusual abilities. I am able to dramatically alter violin sound without even touching the instrument. I regularly tune musical instruments for professional players around the country over the phone. I was living in the Washington, D.C. area where leaks are a part of the landscape, and I soon found the rumors to be even stranger than my skills. It was time to be public, to write a book and to begin teaching others how to change vibration using only the power of thought.

These skills are not just useful to transform the sound and playability of stringed instruments, they are also powerful tools for healing humans and animals. Because enhancing the sound of violins is audible, it shows the reality of this vibration-altering telepathic work. Working with violins also demonstrates to my students that they have effectively focused their consciousnesses in order to intentionally shift the world that appears to be outside of them.

Primum Non Nocere: First, Do No Harm - or How Not to Do Healing
Sheelagh Donnelly, MB.BS, Dip. Palliative Med, MNFSH
    Mistakes can be healing lessons!

The universe has a disturbingly wicked sense of humor. When asked to write about my experiences as a healer, instead of a series of miraculous cures to impress the audience, all that came to mind was a worryingly long string of disasters. "So much for the beckon of fame and fortune!" The idea was quickly shelved in a fit of pique but I was about to learn that you can't escape destiny. There's no such thing as failure - you can always serve a a bad example. "Hmmm," I thought to myself, "Very amusing, you guys! So you kept me out of prison to serve as a bad example? Thanks for that vote of confidence!"

Eventually however, my ruffled feathers settled down and I realized, rather begrudgingly I admit, that Head Office actually had a point. Time and again we hear that Healing causes no harm when done with the right intention. This maxim however does not allow for ingenuous naivetÎ , frank personality disorders and the weird warps of circumstance. Believe me, I know - which is precisely why they chose me, rather than you, to write this article. So, dear friend, take a deep breath and relax back into the safe comfort of your armchair. Allow me to serve you with a sample of instructive examples from the little known manual entitled 'How Not To Do Healing.'

    Borderline Personality: Survivors of Abuse
    David Gersten, MD
Going beyond conventional assessments of BPD

This is the first in a series of two discussions on the origins and treatments of borderline personality disorders (BPD).

If there is a hell on earth, other than war, adult survivors of severe child abuse and/or neglect live there. Those who are close to them are often confused, frightened, frustrated, and angry. Because child abuse and neglect go hand-in-hand, and because they cause the same wounds and the same pain, in this article I will use the term “child abuse” with the understanding that I am always referring to both abuse and neglect. Abuse can be either physical (including sexual) or psychological. At the extreme, survivors of abuse can develop BPD. Our psychiatric hospitals are filled with people suffering from BPD. But there are many walking wounded, high functioning people, survivors of abuse, whose wounds don’t show on the outside, but who carry the same pain and suffering as those formally diagnosed with BPD.

Residual problems of abuse All survivors of abuse must deal with the same four core, persisting, inner states...

Be Attentive, Be Present, Care: Maintaining One's Heart During Medical Training
    William Fenster, MD
I had a conversation today with a third-year classmate. I'll call him Todd. Todd is a very decent guy; He is considerate and intelligent and will be a fine orthopedic surgeon One day, he revealed to me some of his disappointments about medical school. Before medical school he dreamed of being a physician, of working with a team of dedicated people devoted to helping rescue others from serious disease and early death.

Instead of this he found a medical system that is built on egos, and days filled with impersonal work involving almost anything but caring for people. He admitted to me that medical school has changed him. Not that he is bitter, exactly, but that he no longer feels the way that he used to. At this point he knows that in the future he is going to just go about his business, keeping to himself, with no illusion as to changing anything much for the better -- except perhaps for what is directly near to him.

The Circle of Hands Program: Including Families and Friends in the Healing Journey
    Jaentra Green Gardener
The Circle of Hands Program grew from the clinical experience of healers belonging to the Healing Hands Network in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota (see article in IJHC May 2003). These healers have worked on hundreds of people, many of the clients showing remarkable success in overcoming their illnesses.

People seek healers because they are suffering. Either no medical help is available or they seek support in partnership with their medical services. They come with cancers, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS -- Lou Gherig's Disease), fibromylgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson's, diabetes, Crone's disease (ulcerative colitis), or extended pain due to accidents, injury or surgery.

How to Lose Weight with EFT
    Carol C. Look, CSW, DCH
After receiving a doctoral degree in clinical hypnotherapy, I was flooded with referrals for weight loss and smoking cessation. While hypnosis is wonderfully relaxing and many clients quit smoking and lost weight when working with me, nothing prepared me for the success stories of my patients when I started using EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES (EFT) for weight loss and other addictive processes.

EFT is a form of psychological acupressure. By tapping on designated stress-relief points on the face and the body that correspond with acupuncture points, we rebalance the inner energy system, and the body and mind return to healthy, peak functioning. EFT can be used for phobias, general anxiety, pain control, low self-esteem, grief, guilt, shame and many other psychological or physiological challenges. As you will see, EFT is especially helpful with addictions and weight loss.

The Bowen Technique for Pain Relief: Gentle Touch Produces Dramatic Healings
    Gerri Shapiro, MS Ed
About 25 years ago I lifted a very heavy box. Immediately I felt something snap in my lower back. Before I knew what was happening, I crashed to the floor and couldn't get up. I could hardly move. The pain was terrible.

For the next two weeks I could barely get out of bed. and I could only walk a few steps at a time. It took many weeks for the pain to finally subside. Ever since that day, I suffered from chronic back pain.

Although I experienced some relief using heat, cold, massage, chiropractic and acupuncture, invariably the pain always returned - until in 1999 I visited a friend in California who had had similar back problems. She told me she had some body work called Bowen. Her back and hip pain were gone after the first session! I was definitely intrigued. I couldn't wait to find out more.
