Bishop, Beata. The Role of the Transpersonal Dimension in Life-Threatening Illness. Positive Health Nov 2005, 15-17. This is nothing less than meeting the Jungian SHADOW, that part of the psyche that one would rather not own; all one’s so-called bad, unacceptable yet perfectly normal human qualities that have been repressed since childhood: anger, aggression, jealousy, greed, an appetite for power and control.

Clough, William R. To Be Loved and To Love. Journal of Psychology and Theology 2006, 34(1), 23-31. Love is a powerful force in human life. It seems to be one thing, but takes on many forms. A major task in therapy is to tap into intrinsic motivations for healthy change; to help people to fall in love with what they can, at their best, become. The Christian Scriptures offer a definition of love that can encourage healthy growth without the narcissistic overtones of self-esteem, which psychology can fall into, or a mechanical set of doctrines into which Christianity can fall. In this article, the nature of love is considered from psychological and theological literature. The various nuances of love are explored in relationship to attachment theory, altruism, some therapeutic schools, and Biblical perspectives. Finally I John 4, as the prototypical theological discussion of love, is applied to the counseling and growth process.
Hansen-Ketchum, Patricia. Parse’s Theory in Practice An Interpretive Analysis, Journal of Holistic Nursing Mar 2004, 22(1), 57-72 Parse’s theory of human becoming provides a foundation for understanding holistic nursing practice. The purpose of this article is to provide a description of Parse’s theory based on an interpretive analysis of the author’s nursing practice experiences. The interpretive analysis is not an outcome of formal study but results from reflective thought and journal writing. Details from reflections on nursing care experiences were analyzed for the concepts, processes, and rhythms inherent to Parse’s theory. Praxis of Parse’s theory creates the opportunity for nurses, patients, and families to reach profound dimensions of the human experience and participate in multidimensional healing. Outcomes of praxis for nurses also include personal and professional growth as well as discernment of holistic nursing practice.

Sigstad, Hanne Marie H./ Stray-Pedersen, Asbjorg/ Froland, Stig S./ Coping, quality of life and hope in adults with primary antibody deficiencies. Health and Quality of Life Outcomes 2005, 3, 31. Abstract Background. Living with a chronic disease, such as primary antibody deficiency, will often have consequences for quality of life. Previous quality-of-life studies in primary antibody deficiency patients have been limited to different treatment methods. We wanted to study how adults with primary antibody deficiencies manage their conditions and to identify factors that are conducive to coping, good quality of life and hope. Methods. Questionnaires were sent to all patients >20 years of age with primary antibody deficiencies who were served by Rikshospitalet University Hospital. The questionnaires consisted of several standardized scales: Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index (QLI), Short Form–36 (SF-36), Jalowiec Coping Scale (JCS), Nowotny Hope Scale (NHS), and one scale we devised with questions about resources and pressures in the past. Of a total of 91, 55 patients (aged 23-76 years) answered the questionnaires. The questionnaire study were supplemented with selected interviews of ten extreme cases, five with low and five with high quality of life scores. Results. Among the 55 patients, low quality of life scores were related to unemployment, infections in more than four organs, more than two additional diseases, or more than two specific occurrences of stress in the last 2-3 months. Persons with selective IgA deficiency had significantly higher QLI scores than those with other antibody deficiencies. An optimistic coping style was most frequent used, and hope values were moderately high. Based on the interviews, the patients could be divided into three groups: 1) low QLI scores, low hope values, and reduced coping, 2) low QLI scores, moderate hope values, and good coping, and 3) high QLI scores, moderate to strong hope values, and good coping. Coping was related to the patients’ sense of closeness and competence. Conclusions. Low quality of life scores in adults with primary antibody deficiencies were linked to unemployment and disease-related strains. Closeness and competence were preconditions for coping, quality of life and hope. The results are valuable in planning care for this patient group.
Taylor, Bev. Technical, Practical, and Emancipatory Reflection for Practicing Holistically. Journal of Holistic Nursing Mar 2004, 22(1), 73-84. The intention to practice holistically brings with it many complexities in deciding how to manage the contingencies of practice in such a way as to embody the central tenets of holistic nursing. The challenge of making sense of daily work procedures, interpersonal interactions, and issues of power can be eased by attention to reflective processes designed for nursing practice. Reflective nurses who practice holistically optimize the likelihood of thinking systematically through practice issues as they encounter the world of nursing and the people and events within it. This article is an exploration of the phenomena of holism and reflection as they relate to technical, practical, and emancipatory reflective processes used by nurses in their daily work.
