Big Government and Big Pharm setting the stage for WAR on Complementary/Alternative Medicine and your health choice freedom

Setting the Stage
The Federal Government’s  Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) has released a document (http://www.fda.gov/cber/gdlns/altmed.pdf ) stating that the FDA has control over all “biologically based practice” (p8) that is used in the “diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man or other animals” (p9 emphasis added). The document systematically indicates that this includes all Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). This Guidance document does not simply clarify existing regulatory authority but rather dramatically expands the government’s reach into the “biology” and health choices of every American. All “other conditions” means any and everything the government wants it to mean. Your vitamins, food supplements, home remedies, and herbs are now classified as a “drugs” and illegal for you to use without FDA/big government approval.  

Why?
Why the push to control CAM and your health choice freedom? Because Americans are going to CAM providers more than to conventional allopathic doctors and the enormous, international, pharmaceutical and the conventional medical industries do not like competition to their enormous influence and profit.

Big Pharm Agenda
The shocking extent of international Big Pharmaceutical Company reach into the U.S. government was highlighted in 2003 when elected and politically appointed government officials ordered and intimidated Health and Human Services employees to outright lie to congress about the projected cost (underestimate payments to Big Pharm companies by a third or $150 billion dollars) of proposed Medicare prescription drug coverage legislation. In addition to this already blatant pork barrel give away to the Big Pharm companies, was a provision that the Medicare program is forbidden by law to negotiate lower prescription drug prices.

This is the law of the land today. The biggest purchaser of pharmaceutical drugs (Medicare) is forbidden by law to negotiate a good deal for the American public.  We tax payers, through Medicare, must pay Big Pharm whatever outrageous prices they ask, without question. Additionally, all of our prescriptions, not just those covered by Medicare, cost more because Medicare prices set the standard. 

With one sweep of legislation, Big Pharm gets to bilk the American public twice for every prescription filled. The public good has been sold out by our politicians for Big Pharm profits and control. Ever wonder why people go to Mexico or Canada for their medications?

This is just one demonstration that Big Pharm owns politicians and through them federal regulatory agencies. Public servants in federal agencies who want to do a good job are manipulated and intimidated by politics, and big money industry. Because of this Big Pharm influence and corruption, the federal agencies cannot be trusted to represent the good of the American public. We the American Public must speak for ourselves.


Criminalize CAM products

Through the FDA the Big Pharm industries can wage a war on CAM (and influence and profit). The Guidance document declares all CAM products to be “drugs” or “medical devices” requiring extensive testing before they are approved for use. Research methods for biochemically powerful pharmaceutical drugs are not appropriate for evaluating most CAM products and practices that are individualized and subtle. Even when pharmaceutical research methods would be appropriate the millions of dollars for that kind of research is not available.

Under this proposed FDA Guidance for CAM document your vitamins, food supplements, flower drops, homeopathics, etc., will be classified as “drugs” and illegal until the FDA/Big Pharm says otherwise


“Putative Energy” lumped with dangerous radiation

Even “energy” based practice is declared to be “in a sense” (p5) already regulated by the FDA. Chi, Qi, Prana and other “Putative energy fields (or biofields)” (p4) are now lumped together with electromagnetic and ionizing radiation “energy” under FDA authority. From Flower Essences to Reiki, the FDA now claims it regulates any efforts to help yourself or others by such modalities in the same way as it regulates Radiation Therapy for cancer. The FDA document indicates diagnosis or manipulation of any “veritable energy fields” (p5) is practicing medicine without a license. Ironically, “putative energy fields” don’t exist by any conventional physics or medical paradigms but the FDA Guidance Document states it regulates them anyway.

Appropriate concerns

Where there is money or influence, there are unscrupulous practices and people. There are good and bad physicians, medications, procedures, scientists, administrators and politicians. Obviously, there are good and bad CAM practices, practitioners and products.  

It is appropriate to address issues of safety and efficacy of CAM practices and products. FDA expertise can help, for example, with assuring clean preparation and packaging of some products such as herbs. But paradigms of conventional, materialistic allopathic medicine as used by the FDA have no theories to understand CAM practices are all about. Wellness and vitality are not even concepts in conventional medicine (except as marketing ploys). The FDA does not have the expertise to evaluate CAM practices and products for appropriate use or safety, nor does the FDA have the expertise to promote CAM practices that are of benefit to the public. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine http://nccam.nih.gov/ should begin a collaborative, international initiative to address these issues.
