John P. Heptonstall
The aged mathematician Clavius expressed the opinion that the satellites of Jupiter were the children of Galileo's telescope; but the honest Jesuit frankly admitted his mistake when he had himself seen them. Deterred by this backsliding, those of feebler faith declined to look, lest they should be perverted by what they saw... --Richard A. Proctor
Centres of Complementary medicine abound in Britain. Usually the practitioners work independently and may refer their patients to one another if they feel that person may benefit from an additional mode of treatment. It is rare that several practitioners, each a specialist in their own field, work simultantously with a patient. Financial constraints may be a factor, when multiple fees may make such collaborations prohibitively expensive. In other instances, such as with hypnotherapy, one to one interventions may be preferred.
Healers have worked together on single patients for decades. A massing of numbers of spiritual healers has been reported from many healing centres, such as those of Monsignour Michael Buckley and Harry Edwards. Commonly, tens of healers concentrate their healing through the main healer to enhance the healing effects.
I have been involved in Complementary Medicine for almost 15 years and have studied Chinese Medicine as a greater part of that time. The holistic foundation inherent in Chinese Medicine and Philosophy has made me appreciate the value of combining 'healing arts' simultaneously to achieve often quite spectacular results. I have tried several combinations of therapies with colleagues in healing practices. Each time we have been surprised and encouraged by results.
Brief descriptions of a few experiments from my practice follow. I hope they will encourage others to explore simultaneous combined therapies with colleagues.
'Two plus two make ten' is very often experienced when one combines various forms of healing treatments. For example, if one selects a homoeopathic remedy and an appropriate acupuncture point for the disease and then dips the needle into the remedy before insertion, one often gets a combined effect far in excess of expectations of either the remedy or the needling. We have come to call this 'homoeopuncture'. I use herbs with needles, pressure and cupping, which are all forms of therapy in their own rights but which are used in accordance with Chinese theory. Some introduce naturopathic dietary methods or Bach flower remedies as adjuncts to their respective disciplines to create complementary action.
Let me illustrate with a few clinical examples: 1. Working with 'Pat', a spiritual healer, I found her to be very sensitive to movements of energies through her body along the acupuncture meridians, induced by acupuncture point stimulation. We refer to these as 'propagated sensations along the meridian' or PSM for short. I set up an experiment with Marshall, a healer who uses crystals in his work.
Pat lay on the treatment table and Marshall positioned his crystals at various locations around her and on particular chakra centres. Pat felt the energies of some of the crystals begin to activate. I then inserted needles into leg points. As I stimulated these needles by twirling them she felt meridian energy movement. I burnt moxa on some of the needles and then again stimulated them. The movement of energy became more pronounced. Marshall was seated on a chair beside her. As the sensation of moving energy reached her shoulder I asked Marshall to hold her hand on that side. He felt the energy flow into his hand, up to his shoulder and then down his right side through his leg to his foot. He had suffered a painful knee for many months. This pain disappeared after our experiment and never returned.
2. Lorraine is a healer who induces deep relaxation in patients and uses regression techniques where she feels it appropriate. Working on Sarah, she found it impossible to reach a deep relaxation because Sarah suffered from extreme anxiety. We joined together and I gave Sarah an acupuncture treatment to counteract the anxiety just prior to Lorraine's therapy. After the combined session Sarah remarked that she had never before experienced such a total body numbness and relaxation during therapy. She had only been able to sense activity in her brain, in responding to Lorraine's therapy.
3. I worked with Pat amongst a 'circle' of clairvoyants and healers which also contained several elderly people with a variety of chronic ailments. The circle was formed. I asked each person what ailment they suffered. Some had arthritic joints and/or spines; others had emotional problems; etc. In each person I placed only one or two needles appropriate for their condition. We then sat and the circle joined hands. Pat began the healing energy movement, each person successively concentrating on the movement around the circle. It could be felt passing from one to the next until it had completed the circle. Everyone felt some modest benefit immediately after the session. However, the following week several remarked that their bad joints had never been as good for years.
The transfer of energy from one to another may also be blocked by anyone in the circle who is sceptical or is afraid to let it flow.
In summary, I find that the concentration of several therapists on the condition of one person seems to bring enhanced benefits.
I believe that biological energy is as natural a phenomenon as running water. The Chinese use 'Qi Gong' therapy to build up reservoirs of such energy through diet and exercises. The manipulation of this energy through acupuncture is also well documented.
The physical body is permeated by several energies, manifesting as the etheric body, the aura, and other phenomena visible to some sensitive people. Cellular radiation emissions may to some extent provide an intermediate explanation for such activity. These energies also permeate our whole environment and are available to us through food, water and air. We can draw upon them at will.
