Dr. Jean Roberton Why some come to the edge of their suffering and break through while others curl back into an embryonic cinder is impossible for me to say. For some, fear teaches about fearlessness, anger teaches about the depth of love, self-hatred teaches about how merciless we are with ourselves. --Steven Levine
Whilst on a recent holiday and lecture trip to Florida I was interested to hear Dr. John Breen speak on his specialty in Infectious Diseases. He observed that the vast majority of his patients with "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" were middle aged wealthy ladies, with every material comfort. All the scientific tests were inconclusive. I asked if he did not think that this disease was one of the soul. He grudgingly admitted that after fifteen years of working in this field my hypothesis seemed the only one to fit.
My own experience of ten patients with M.E. in General Practice shows six women and four men between 20-30 years old. None were wealthy. Indeed, most were without means.
Two young single women have experienced between three and five years of extended illness with negative laboratory tests. Both seem to be making slow progress. Spiritual healing in the surgery seemed to help the one, but the other refused the offer as she was a Jehovah's Witness and was prayed for by her church.
One thirty year-old man is recovered after five years. He received absent healing from his church. Monthly intramuscular Magnesium appears to have been beneficial also. He has finally decided that his career must be in the theatre and not academia as previously expected.
'Phil', another 30 year-old patient, seems happier now that he has launched himself into the world of pop music but after five years of illness he still is tired.very easily. My clairvoyant teacher (in personal development and healing) informed me from thirty miles away that this man's energy did not flow up and down the neck due to an old injury. On further questioning Phil disclosed that he had fallen through a ceiling onto his head six years ago. He seems too poorly motivated and/or impecunious to visit a crainosacral therapist.
'Beverly', a 20 year-old receptionist with a history of five years of M.E. and a severe limp had had healing several times. She was the surprised recipient of an apparently powerful, though not consciously directed, absent healing. She was in my surgery in a room below the room in which a healer was speaking over the telephone with a healer in another city when this occurred. She felt a strong surge of healing energy descending upon her from above. Beverly's limp was dramatically improved but the surgery telephone system malfunctioned severely following this healing. Her husband fell over and broke her walking stick next evening and she has not limped since. Her regular healing has involved her working through considerable deep and painful emotional problems. She is now self confident, physically fit and a charming positive person with deep sensitivity and emerging psychic abilities.
Two 45 year-old twin ladies received healing for about a year, after several years of illness and personal trauma. Both developed into natural healers. A 48 year-old lady is weathering a fourth year of fatigue, which seems to be related to the demands of a domineering mother-in-law. Marital problems seem to worsen her disease. Healing seems to improve her physical symptoms but only for a short time. She has not managed to change her mental or emotional patterns to any degree. One 30 year-old married man improved after a year when he decided to move out of "the rat race of the London stock market" and took up teaching instead. He found healing to be helpful.
'Frank', a second 28 year-old single man remains consistently fatigued after two years. He received six healing sessions. It was difficult to assess whether it helped him and he has not returned. My practice partner who continues to follow him feels that Frank has no particular wish to become well. My impression is that M.E. is a complex syndrome. There are probably viral or other vectors in some cases but not demonstrably so in all.
A depletion of the bioenergy field would seem the best description. I feel that the true cause can only be found by a healer of advanced diagnostic skills.
Further factors include the characterological traits, emotional condition and motivation of the patients to get better or, conversely, factors of secondary gain which may seduce patients into holding on to their illnesses.
Until we have more information, each patient must be treated on an ad hoc holistic basis. Healing should be offered as part of any therapy for chronic fatigue syndromes.
