Spiritual healing for infertility, pregnancy, labor, and delivery
Daniel J. Benor, MD

Abstract:  Spiritual healing (as in Therapeutic Touch, Healing Touch, Reiki, Prayer and related approaches) has been reported anecdotally to be of benefit for most of the ills of mankind. Research in the past few decades amply confirms this assertion. This paper discusses the applications of healing for infertility, pregnancy, labor and delivery. Though healers in the UK are forbidden by law to give healing around the time of birth without the supervision of a midwife or other medical personnel, healers are increasingly working alongside conventional caregivers in doctorsÕ offices and hospitals. There is a definite place for healers to participate in bringing life into the world.

Healers and grateful parents report that labor and delivery are eased when healing is given and that babies born after receiving healing seem more alert and ÒconnectedÓ to those around them.

JELLO: A HOSPICE THERAPY CAT
Diane Grindol

Pets can be great therapists in hospice

It is Sister Judy Seefeld, an Adrian Dominican Catholic nun, who has arranged transportation, food and lodging for Jello through the years and originally lined up her therapy work. From the time Sister Judy first got to know Jello, she noticed that she was especially friendly and gentle. Sister Judy thought she should be sharing her with other people, somehow. In 1996 she was at the Hospice to return some materials she was using in her classroom, where a student had a brain tumor that would eventually claim her life. Sister Judy mentioned to one of the hospice administrative staff that she had a cat and would like to do something to share her with people who would appreciate her special loving qualities.

The Hospice administrator responded, "We have a pet program here that was popular, but the participant numbers have dwindled. If you think Jello would be a good therapy cat, bring her in so I can meet her." Sister Judy's heart skipped a beat. This was the opportunity she had hoped for. Jello had an interview in short order, and eschewing all propriety, jumped up on the desk to meet her new "boss." The administrator fell in love with Jello, who had all the glowing attributes that Sister Judy had described. There wasn't any hesitation about signing Jello up as a therapy cat. Sister Judy started to work on the paperwork required for Jello to be at Hospice regularly. She needed a physical to bring her vaccinations up to date and a letter from her veterinarian stating that she was free from disease.

Within a couple weeks they started their visits...

AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE TRANSMISSION
OF HEALING ENERGY VIA E-MAIL
Francesca McCartney, PhD

Healing can be focused via emails

This research studies the intentional encapsulation of healing energies into an email text message and transmission of these energies via the Internet to an intended intuitive recipient. This study, framed within the field of energy medicine, researches the potential impact on the learning of distance student, and investigates a method for a stronger link-transference of information between distance educators and students. This study tests information discovery on non-linear, non-local communication, and studies an implied evolution of the sense of intuition.

Distance education and intuitive communication are both non-linear, non-local systems of information exchange. Internet email can hold intentional sensorial resonance; and this type of email can be used as a provider of energy-information which can be utilized as part of an energy medicine distance education program. An intuitive person can open an Internet transmitted email and receive the emotional/cognitive content of intentionally encapsulated energy/information; and this occurs both as a non-local and non-linear experience...

Within this research is a hypothesis that a student and teacher may be more strongly connected at a distance with the intentional link of energy/intention included within the curriculum of a distance education program. This linkage information gives new significance to distance healing research within the medical, parapsychological, and noetic sciences. This research seeks to inspire and identify fertile areas for further cross-disciplinary exploration...

The well-known Crab Nebula (also known as "Messier 1"), is the remnant of a supernova explosion at a distance of about 6,000 light-years from earth, observed almost 1000 years ago, in the year 1054. It contains a neutron star near its center that spins 30 times per second around its axis.

Technical details: In this three color composite picture, the green light is predominantly produced by hydrogen emission from material ejected by the star that exploded. The blue light is predominantly emitted by very high-energy ("relativistic") electrons that spiral in a large-scale magnetic field (so-called syncrotron emission). It is believed that these electrons are continuously accelerated and ejected by the rapidly spinning neutron star at the center of the nebula and which is the remnant core of the exploded star.

***STUDIES and PROGRESS NOTES***

** SPIRITUAL AWARENESS AND HEALING **
A random events generator (REG) shows changes when placed near a bioenergy therapy practitioner.
"In the presence of a healer, an REG produced greater than chance excursions more often than a control REG in a library setting.  The [REG recordings during] healing and nonhealing phases demonstrated inconsistent results.  REG deviations were not influenced by the amount of attention directed toward the machine."
Cindy C. Crawford, B.A., Wayne B. Jonas, M.D., Rogers Nelson, Ph.D., Margaret Wirkus, and Mietek Wirkus, Alterations in Random Event Measures Associated with a Healing Practice, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine,
2003, 9(3), 345-353.
IJHC/WHR Observations:

Random events generators (REGs) have shown changes when direct intent is directed towards them by people sitting in front of the device. REGs have also shown significant deviations during periods of major collective focus - such as the events of 9-11 and the OJ Simpson trials broadcasts.
It is difficult to know whether inadvertent attention by the healer could have produced the effects on the device, rather than any influence of the healing. This question is further supported by a lack of difference between REG recordings during periods of healing and non-healing.

Suggestion for this month:

Healing for Intrauterine Fetal Growth Retardation (IUGR)
IUGR is a medical term for "babies who are growing much more slowly than normal." IUGR is a condition identified in the second trimester of pregnancy, at which time there is absolutely nothing that can be done for these babies - even though there are many known causes for the condition (e.g. maternal smoking, small stature of parents, etc.).

About 75% of these babies are born prematurely and small for their age, leaving them vulnerable to brain damage that impairs them for life.

Spiritual healing is known to promote growth in plants and alleged to promote growth in mice. It is a safe intervention. It appears highly likely that IUGR would respond to healing.

** WHOLISTIC APPROACHES **

Scientists say 25% of Caesareans could be avoided
Scientists at the University of Liverpool say 25% of emergency Caesareans could be avoided if women experiencing difficulties in childbirth are given alternative treatment.
The researchers have identified the primary cause of a failed uterus during childbirth - an excess of lactic acid. Scientists say the problems caused by an excess of lactic acid may be overcome by temporarily resting the uterus during labour.
Dr Siobahn Quenby, Consultant Obstetrician at the Liverpool Women's Hospital, said: "Currently, in difficult labour, obstetricians stimulate the uterus to speed up the labour. If, however, as we have discovered, the uterus is exhausted and overcome with acid, rest may be the better option for a successful natural birth."
http://www.liv.ac.uk/newsroom/press_releases/2004/05/uteri.htm
IJHC/WHR OBSERVATIONS
Midwives have a much lower rate of caesarian operations than physicians. They report that maternal and physician stress and defensive medicine are the primary issues in precipitating this often unnecessary physician intervention.

Love is healing
Kim-Cohen J, Moffitt TE, Caspi A, Taylor A. Genetic and Environmental Processes in Young Children's Resilience and Vulnerability to Socioeconomic Deprivation. Child Dev. 2004 May-Jun;75(3):651-68
Research at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London and University of Wisconsin-Madison shows that  some children exposed to socioeconomic (SES) deprivation are resilient and function better than expected, given the level of deprivation they have experienced.
The present study tested genetic and environmental contributions to young children's resilience and vulnerability to SES deprivation. Children's resilience was assessed by the difference between their actual score and the score predicted by their level of SES deprivation in the E-Risk Study, an epidemiological cohort of 1,116 five-year-old twin pairs.
Consistent with previous research, results showed that maternal warmth, stimulating activities, and children's outgoing temperament appeared to promote positive adjustment in children exposed to SES deprivation. Findings add new information by demonstrating that resilience is partly heritable and that protective processes operate through both genetic and environmental effects.

Mental health magazine launched

A mental health charity and one of the editors behind Penthouse and OK! are launching a magazine aimed at helping people understand mental illness, with common-sense advice.
The charity Sane and publisher Jonathon Richards have joined forces to create the 'There There' magazine.
It aims to offer accessible explanations of stress anxiety and mental health problems, and advice on how to deal with them.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3777321.stm
IJHC and WHR Observations
Self-help and taking responsibility for your own problems is a major aspect of wholistic healing. The first step is obtaining adequate, reliable information. While physicians tend to prescribe tranuilizers and antidepressants as the easiest way for dealing with mental health issues, this is like screwing the lid on the pot that is boiling over. Self-healing is like turning the fire down under the pot.

 ** COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES **

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) report confirms high use of CAM in US
According to a new nationwide government survey, 36 percent of U.S. adults aged 18 years and over use some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)É When prayer specifically for health reasons is included in the definition of CAM, the number of U.S. adults using some form of CAM in the past year rises to 62 percent.
The survey, administered to over 31,000 representative U.S. adults, was conducted as part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) 2002 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Developed by NCCAM and the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the survey included questions on 27 types of CAM therapies commonly used in the United States. These included 10 types of provider-based therapies, such as acupuncture and chiropractic, and 17 other therapies that do not require a provider, such as natural products (herbs or botanical products), special diets, and megavitamin therapy.
The 10 most commonly used CAM therapies and the approximate percent of U.S. adults using each therapy were:

-  Prayer for own health, 43 percent
-  Prayer by others for the respondent's health, 24 percent
-  Natural products (such as herbs, other botanicals, and enzymes), 19 percent
-  Deep breathing exercises, 12 percent
-  Participation in prayer group for own health, 10 percent
-  Meditation, 8 percent
-  Chiropractic care, 8 percent
-  Yoga, 5 percent
-  Massage, 5 percent
-  Diet-based therapies (such as Atkins, Pritikin, Ornish, and Zone diets), 4 percent.

In addition to gathering data on the use of CAM practices, the survey also sought information about why people use CAM. Key findings indicate that:

-  55 percent of adults said they were most likely to use CAM because they believed that it would help them when combined with conventional medical treatments;
-  50 percent thought CAM would be interesting to try;
-  26 percent used CAM because a conventional medical professional suggested they try it; and
-  13 percent used CAM because they felt that conventional medicine was too expensive.

Interestingly, the survey also found that about 28 percent of adults used CAM because they believed conventional medical treatments would not help them with their health problem; this is in contrast to previous findings that CAM users are not, in general, dissatisfied with conventional medicine.

** ENVIRONMENT (HEALING OUR PLANET) **

Balmford , Andrew, et al. The worldwide costs of marine protected areas, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, Published online before print June 17, 2004
Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA
, 10.1073/pnas.0403239101
Declines in marine harvests, wildlife, and habitats have prompted calls at both the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the 2003 World Parks Congress for the establishment of a global system of marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs that restrict fishing and other human activities conserve habitats and populations and, by exporting biomass, may sustain or increase yields of nearby fisheries. Here we provide an estimate of the costs of a global MPA network, based on a survey of the running costs of 83 MPAs worldwide... Models extrapolating these findings suggest that a global MPA network meeting the World Parks Congress target of conserving 20-30% of the world's seas might cost between $5 billion and $19 billion annually to run and would probably create around one million jobs. Although substantial, gross network costs are less than current government expenditures on harmful subsidies to industrial fisheries. They also ignore potential private gains from improved fisheries and tourism and are dwarfed by likely social gains from increasing the sustainability of fisheries and securing vital ecosystem services.

London's Charing Cross tests barcoding patients
Hospital authorities hope the system will improve patient safety by reducing drug-related errors on the ward.
In England, five out of every 100 oral drug doses in hospitals go wrong, according to the Department of Health's most recent statistics.
But most mistakes are not harmful, say officials, as errors typically involve missed or delayed doses.
Charing Cross is one of just two hospitals in the world testing the new barcoding system, which links patients to a computerised drugs trolley, or Smart Cart, on the ward.

Robo-pets
Clean and tidy, completely compliant, these robots can be programmed to the needs of the elderly and infirm. They can be programmed to sing, repeat comforting phrases, and bark in response to a doorbell. People form strong attachments to these robots.
IJHC/WHR Observations:
Where insensitive or over-cautious or litigation-sensitive nursing homes refuse to allow people to have pets, these could be a helpful substitute.
Sad, however, that robots should replace real human caring.

Life offers lessons for business
Evolution on the Galapagos Islands has helped inspire researchers developing novel ways to tackle some of the trickiest problems in business.

Brighton-based Codefarm is using evolutionary computing to swiftly search through thousands of potential solutions to these problems. To speed up the time it takes to find the best answer, the system runs on a cluster, or grid, of computers.
The pattern of evolution on the islands is now being put to more commercial uses.
Many firms, said Jeremy Mabbitt, managing director of Codefarm, build numerical models to help them understand what they do and get better at itÉ Codefarm had found a way to help businesses search through the space of possible answers by harnessing techniques from evolution and the way life has developed on the Galapagos Islands.
The algorithms used by Codefarm act as the basic genetic material for possible solutions, which are then recombined and mutated to create novel answers.

Physicians for a National Health Program is a single issue organization advocating a universal, comprehensive Single-Payer National Health Program. PNHP has more than 10,000 members and chapters across the United States.
Since 1987, we've advocated for reform in the US health care system. A large part of our work involves educating health professionals about the benefits of a Single-Payer system--including fewer administrative costs and affording health insurance for the 41 million Americans who have none.
Our members and physician activists work toward a Single-Payer National Health Program in their communities. PNHP organizes rallies, town hall meetings, and debates; coordinates speakers and forum discussions; contributes Op-Eds and articles to the nation's top newspapers, medical journals and magazines;and appears regularly on national television and news programs advocating for a Single-Payer system.
PNHP is the only organization in the United States dedicated to implementing a Single-Payer National Health Program.

Condom express fights the epidemic of Chlamydia venereal infections
A new take on emergency contraception
When the number of chlamydia cases in young Swedish people doubled in one year, health workers decided drastic measures were needed to boost the use of condoms.
The result can be seen on the streets of three Swedish cities from this weekend: condom ambulances.
In Gothenburg, Stockholm and Malmo, several emergency vehicles will be on standby three days a week, waiting for calls from those caught in a promising situation, but without protection.
For only 50 kronas (£4) the cars (dubbed the "Cho-San Express" after a well-known make of condoms) will deliver 10 condoms to any address within the city boundaries.
RFSU, the Swedish health trust and condom makers, came up with the idea because of the alarming rise in sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia among young people.

Sheldrake, Rupert. Dogs that Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home: and Other Unexplained Powers of Animals, New York: Three Rivers 1999.  352pp $14.00
Rupert Sheldrake is renowned for his theory of morphogenetic fields. These fields are species-specific collections of experiences individuals have, which are available to all members of the species. These fields provide information on knowledge and behaviors that are helpful to the species, such as migration routes and other learned behaviors. For instance, mice have learned paths through laboratory mazes, and members of the same species who were not direct descendents of the original lab animals subsequently learned the same mazes much more quickly.

Allen M. Schoen, DVM and Pam Proctor. Love, Miracles and Animal Healing, New York, NY: Simon & Schuster 1995. 240 pp
Allen Schoen and Pam Proctor bring us a rich, detailed spectrum of ways in which love, intuition and complementary/ alternative therapies can help animals small and large. This book is rich in anecdotes and reports of healings on physical, psychological and spiritual levels for animals with these approaches after conventional veterinary care had exhausted its potentials to help. Schoen integrates acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal remedies in his practice. (More in IJHC May 2004)

Healing Research, Volume II -
Consciousness, Bioenergy and Healing:
Self-Healing and Energy Medicine for the 21st Century
Daniel J. Benor, M.D.
Foreword by C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD

This book will dramatically broaden and deepen your understanding of health, illness and healing.

Consciousness: We have far greater potential for healing ourselves and each other than we generally appreciate. Dr. Benor, a wholistic psychiatrist, explains how mind-body and body-mind interactions can cause illness or promote health through wholistic interactions of body, emotions, mind, relationships (with other people and the environment) and spirit.  An enormous body of research, clinical examples and a variety of theories explain healing through complementary/ alternative medicine (CAM), including meditation, visualization, acupuncture, osteopathy and many more modalities, with clear and concise explanations of each of these healing modalities.

Bioenergy: Newtonian medicine has been slow to absorb the lessons of quantum physics: The body can be addressed not only as matter, but also as energy. Subtle biological energies are used by many CAM therapies - some moving through the hands of the therapist, others through specialized interventions explained by Dr. Benor. Acupuncture addresses energies in acupuncture points, along meridians running from head to toes, and in chakras - the body's energy regulating centers. Homeopathy and flower essences introduce energies and information through the water that is their vehicle for treatment. Does all this sound strange? Dr. Benor has gathered an amazing body of research in this book to confirm the healing potentials of these subtle bioenergy therapies - explaining some of the roles of our energy body.
Biological energies interact with environmental energies. Dr. Benor reviews a wealth of research on unconventional energies and considers their relevance to spiritual healing - following on Volume I of Healing Research, which reviews 191 controlled studies of healing, demonstrating it is a highly effective treatment.

Healing: Dr. Benor explains how we can create health or illness through body-mind interactions, wholistic CAM and bioenergy medicine interventions. He reviews and discusses impressive research supporting claims that CAM and bioenergy therapies are potent and effective treatments.

Unusual layers on Phoebe, Saturn's moon

We can achieve extraordinary feats in outer space: We sent a spacecraft to explore the moons of Saturn.

When will we master the explorations of inner space: To identify the reasons within ourselves for our insensitivity to the needs of our own planet?

What caused the unusual light and dark layers on Saturn's moon Phoebe? The layers were discovered during the Cassini spacecraft flyby of the small moon. Such layering is particularly evident on the crater just above the image center, where alternating light and dark material makes this crater appear particularly structured. Cassini scientists speculate that such layering might result from an impact where a dark surface layer becomes intertwined with a lighter subsurface ice layer. The above image spans about 80 kilometers and was taken when Cassini was only about 13,000 kilometers from Phoebe. The Cassini spacecraft will be instructed to fire its thrusters to decelerate into orbit around Saturn.

PLEASE SUPPORT THE WHR AND IJHC NEWSLETTERS
AND THIS SITE!

WholisticHealingResearch.com and the Newsletters were created and are maintained and expanded as a labor of love and dedication to healing - without outside support.

Many have suggested charging for access to WHR and our Newsletters, but I don’t want to exclude those without means to pay. There are many visitors to WHR from parts of the world where credit cards and funds are not as readily available as they may be to you, and people urgently seeking information about healing who may not be in a space to pay for access to WHR.

Your donation of $5 (more will be gratefully accepted!) will go towards expanding the resources available on the site, to update sections of the site as new studies and progress in healing are published, and towards secretarial support so that Dr. Benor can devote more time to developing and expanding the content of the site.
