PLEASE SUPPORT THIS SITE!
WholisticHealing Research.com was created as a labor of love
and dedication to healing, without outside support.
Many have suggested charging for access to WHR and our Newsletters, but I
don’t want to exclude those without means to pay. There are many visitors to
WHR from parts of the world where credit cards and funds are not as readily
available as they may be to you, and people urgently seeking information
about healing who may not be in a space to pay for access to WHR.
Your donation of $5 (more will be gratefully accepted!) will go towards
expanding the resources available on the site, to update sections of the
site as new studies and progress in healing are published, and towards
secretarial support so that Dr. Benor can devote more time to the content of
the site.

19th Alexander Imich Essay Contest
Exceptional Human Experience (EHE) autobiographical essays
Dear Publisher, Editor, or Colleague:
We would like to notify you of the 19th Alexander Imich Essay Contest on
exceptional human experience (EHE) autobiographical essays. An EHE
autobiography is a record of one's nonordinary, exceptional, and
transcendent experiences and their meaning for the individual who has them.
It is an autobiography of one's inner life rather than circumstances that
are publicly observable. One thousand dollars in prize money is offered by
Alexander Imich, Ph.D. The contest is being sponsored by Dr. Imich and the
Exceptional Human Experience Network (EHE Network).
A notice containing details of the contest is inserted at the end of this
letter. It also is being sent as an attachment. We would appreciate if you
would publish it in any publication you are associated with whose
readership may be interested also post it on your website. Thank you.
Our announcement, in effect, describes the primary thrust of the work of
the EHE Network. There appears to be considerable overlap between our
interests and yours. We would appreciate it if you would provide a link
from your website to ours and give permission to link your website with
ours.
Sincerely,
Rhea A. White
Director
2001 IMICH ESSAY CONTEST
The topic of the 19th Imich Essay Contest provides contestants with the
opportunity to look at their unusual experiences, especially mystical,
transcendent, and psychical ones, and afterdeath communications and other
death-related experiences, out-of-body experiences, dreams and visions,
encounters with apparitions, UFOs, and crop circles, and experiences at
holy and power places. Accounts of these nonordinary experiences that
usually describe details of the experience itself seldom deal with the
experience's aftereffects. Over time, as one learns to integrate an
exceptional human experience, it can alter the way one thinks about
oneself, other people, other species-plant and animal-and Earth itself.
These experiences also can change the way one looks at life and the world
and the way one lives it. They can increase the sense of meaning in one's
life. This is of central importance to the Exceptional Human Experience
Network, cosponsor of the contest, which is funded by Dr. Imich, who is
founder of the Anomalous Phenomena Research Center in New York City.
The essays, which can be as many as 40 pages long, double spaced, typed or
word processed, should describe all the experiences you have had that you
consider had the most impact on you as a person and on your life's meaning.
If you have had numerous experiences, then describe the one of each type
that had the most profound effect on you. Describe each experience in
detail and the impact it had on you from the time of the experience to
date. Sometimes it is useful, after you have recorded your experiences, to
read them over a few days in a row, looking for themes that turn up in more
than one experience. This can sometimes enable you to see the direction of
your life more clearly. We call the process of writing about your
experiences and teasing out their meaning the creation of an EHE
autobiography. It is primarily about your deepest, highest inner life
rather than the external circumstances of your life and the publicly
available information about you.
Alexander Imich and the Exceptional Human Experience Network invite you to
submit 4 copies double spaced of your unpublished essay written
specifically for this contest. If an IBM-compatible computer is available,
please send an electronic version instead, either on a diskette or as an
attachment. The prize is a total of $1000, which may be given to from 1 to
4 contestants, depending on the number and quality essays submitted.
Submission grants the EHE Network the right to publish the essay in its
journal or newsletter and include the experiences in its database of
experiences or on our website, using only your initials. (Essayists are
free to publish their essays elsewhere.) We need your full name and address
in order to notify you if you win a prize. Your essay can be the full 40
pages or less (the limit for past essays has been 20 pages). Because of the
extended page limit, this contest will run the entire year of 2001. Essays
are due at midnight, December 31, 2001. You may submit them any time during
the year. It takes about 3 months to process the essays and determine the
winner(s).
The winners will be announced on our website and will be notified
individually. Any contestant who wants to be notified of the results, even
if he or she was not a winner, should send a self-addressed and stamped
envelope to the EHE Network at the address below. If you do not get a
prompt response, it is because the winners have not yet been determined.
For information on past contests and more information on exceptional human
experiences, check out our website at <http:/www.ehe.org>.
Send essays to EHE Network, 414 Rockledge Road, New Bern NC 28562. No faxes
accepted. Attached e-mailed submissions are preferred. Send to Rhea A.

NEW STUDIES
Spiritual Healing
Harkness, EF/ Abbot, NC, Ernst, E, A randomized clinical trial of
distant healing for peripheral common warts, American Journal of Medicine
2000 (Apr 15), 108(6):448-52
84 patients were randomized to absent healing (by experienced healers in
England) or control groups. Numbers of warts did not alter significantly,
nor were there significant differences in depression or anxiety scores
between groups. The control group had significantly less anxiety and
depression at the end of the study relative to baseline measures.
Comments: Warts are a poor choice for study of healing
effects. They are notoriously subject to improvement by suggestions of
almost any sort. It is actually odd that there were no significant effects
of suggestion on the warts in this study.

A disturbing story at CNN's web site:
http://fyi.cnn.com/2001/fyi/teachers.ednews/02/23/school.hugs.ap/index.html
As reported by CNN: February 27, 2001.
MINNESOTA SCHOOL BANS HUGGING!
PEQUOT LAKES, Minnesota (AP) -- Students are being punished for hugging. The
students claim it's simply a show of affection. The school is concerned that
it is too sexual.
The same concerns have led to laws prohibiting psychotherapists from
touching clients. In this case, with significant numbers of therapists
admitting they were having sex with clients, the concern is more
understandable - though no less a sad commentary on our society.
SUBJECT: HAND OF HOPE
A picture began circulating in November. In many people's opinions, it
should be proclaimed as "The Picture of the Year," or perhaps, "The Picture
of the Decade." It won't be. In fact, unless you obtained a copy of the
paper you probably will never see it.
The picture is that of a 21-week-old unborn baby named Samuel Alexander
Armas, who is being operated on by a surgeon named Joseph Bruner. The baby
was diagnosed with spina bifida and would not survive if removed from the
mother's womb. Little Samuel's mother, Julie Armas, is an obstetrics nurse
in Atlanta. She knew of Dr. Bruner's remarkable surgical procedure.
Practicing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, he performs
these special operations while the baby is still in the womb. In the
procedure, a C-section removes the uterus and the doctor makes a small
incision to operate on the baby.
During the surgery on little Samuel, the little guy reached his tiny, but
fully developed, hand through the incision and firmly grasped the surgeon's
finger. The photograph captures this amazing event with perfect clarity.
The editors titled the picture, "Hand of Hope." The text explaining the
picture begins, "The tiny hand of 21-week-old fetus Samuel Alexander Armas
emerges from the mother's uterus to grasp the finger of Dr. Joseph Bruner as
if thanking the doctor for the gift life...."
You can see the actual picture, and it is awesome...incredible

Spiritual Awareness
Spirituality is gaining acknowledgment as a important and legitimate
aspect of psychotherapy. Here is a doctoral dissertation reviewing the
relevant literature and developing "a model of psychotherapy with the soul
and spirituality as central constructs." (from the dissertation abstract)

Between Psychology and Religion, Psy.D. Pepperdine University 1997
Brock found that ". . . psychologists find spirituality to
be a relevant topic in psychology and that spirituality is correlated with
increased mental health."

Guide to Your Child's Symptoms: Fears/Phobias
http://www.aap.org/pubserv/fears.htm
A parents' guide to assessing children's fears.
EMAIL written by an anonymous student from Columbine
High who witnessed one of the many massacres there. This is their very
mature and thought-provoking observation.
"The Paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but
shorter tempers, wider freeways but narrower viewpoints; we spend more but
we have less, we buy more but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses and
smaller families; more conveniences but less time; we have more degrees but
less sense, more knowledge but less judgement; more experts , but more
problems ;more medicine but less wellness. We have multiplied our
possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom and
hate too often. We've learned how to make a living but not a life; we've
added years to life and not life to years. We've been all the way to the
moon and back but we have trouble crossing the street to meet the new
neighbor.
We've conquered outer space but not inner space; we've cleaned up the air
but polluted the soul; we've split the atom but not our prejudices. We have
higher incomes but lower morals; we've become long on quantity but short on
quality. These are the times of tall men and short character, steep profits
and shallow relationships, world peace but domestic warfare, more leisure
but less fun, more kinds of food but less nutrition. These are the days of
two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses but broken homes. It is a time
when there is much in the show window and nothing in the stock room; a time
when technology can bring this email to you and a time you can choose either
to make a difference or just delete" .

NEW STUDIES
Spiritual Healing
Harald Wiesendanger, et al, Chronically ill
patients treated by spiritual healing improve quality of life: results of a
randomized waiting-list controlled study, J. of Alternative and
Complementary Medicine 2001, 7(1), 45-51
Wiesendanger et al studied 59 people in Germany with chronic physical
problems that had been present for at least a year and resistant to other
forms of treatment. Distant healing over 5 months significantly improved
quality of life (p < 0.0005) in the treatment group. Quality of life was
unchanged in the control group.
William Tiller, Walter E.Dibble, Jr and Michael J. Hohane, Exploring
robust interactions between human intention and inanimate/animate systems,
Part 1: Experimental, Frontier Perspectives: The Center for Frontier
Sciences at Temple University, 2000, 9(2), 6-22.
Tiller and colleagues developed devices for
imprinting intentions. For instance, the intention to raise or lower the
acidity (pH) of water can be imprinted on their device, and an experimenter
who is blind to the direction of the intent can put the device in water and
confirm that it is effective.
As the body is 65 percent water, this
study suggests a confirmation of the possibility that healers may influence
the body through their intent.

Lawsuit over dental amalgam
Dentists and patients are bringing suit in Federal court in
Greenbelt, MD against state regulators for preventing their discussion of
possible health hazards with their patients. Silver amalgam includes about
50% mercury. It is believed by many dentists and wholistic practitioners
that mercury released from these fillings can contribute to chronic fatigues
syndrome, and perhaps also to the development of Parkinsonism and
Alzheimer's Disease.
The legal complaint is that dental regulators utilize "control of dental
licenses to punish, or to threaten punishment of, dentists who criticize
mercury amalgam," which violates First Amendment rights of dentists.

discussion ranges across a broad spectrum of neurophysiological and
neuropsychological observations, with fascinating discussions on
"neurospirituality."

Rivers Press 1999.
P.M.H. Atwater presents a very rich feast of
materials on NDEs of children and how these transformed their lives.

Spiritual Healing
Diane Wind Wardell and Joan Engebretson, Biological correlates of Reiki
Touchsm healing, Journal of Advanced Nursing 2001, 33(4),
439-445.
In a single-group, repeated measures design, 23 healthy
volunteers were assessed before and after a standardized Reiki Touch
treatment. Comparing before and after treatment measures, there were
significant reductions in state anxiety (p = 0.02) and systolic blood
pressure (p = 0.003), and significant rises in salivary immunoglobulin-A
(IgA - p = 0.03). There were no significant changes in salivary cortisol.

Millions of comfortable people around the country are
choosing the freedom of having less "stuff" to worry about. Being happier
with fewer trappings is easy when it saves you money, benefits the
environment, teaches children meaningful values and helps others in need.
Best of all, simple living delivers the personal satisfaction that only
comes when you decide how much is enough for you. In short, simpler living
is not backward living, but forward living. Less time spent on material
goods means more time spent with family, friends, children, nature, and
unlocking the real passions and values of your life. Seeds of Simplicity
can help!
Seeds of Simplicity is a national, nonprofit
membership organization working to help build a strong voice for voluntary
simplicity as an authentic social and environmental issue. It is a Los
Angeles-based program of the Center for Religion, Ethics & Social Policy at
Cornell University. All resources are available without charge to
members and
include diverse educational materials on free-thinking for children and
adults, the consultation/coordination services of
The Simplicity Circles Project,
and the opportunity to preserve a changing "living legacy" for present and
future generations in the Living
Legacies Archive that is part of this web site.

J Allergy Clin Immunol 2001;107:887-890
Dr. Karen Binkley and colleagues, at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto,
suggest that idiopathic environmental intolerance (IEI), AKA multiple
chemical sensitivity, may be akin to panic attacks. This is based on DNA
analysis. The article is based on early research, highly speculative, but
interesting.

This is a beautiful clinical report of how medical staff helped a person
with cancer reconnect with his sense of the spiritual after he felt he had
lost his connection with God.

Dana Zohar and Ian Marshall, SQ: Spiritual Intelligence: The Ultimate
Intelligence, New York: Bloomsbury 2000 324 pp 6 pp of refs $14.95
While preferring a brain-based basis for awareness, Zohar and Marshall
marshal a wealth of research and discuss a spectrum of views cogently and
succinctly. Excellent discussion on several personality types and how they
might differ in their explorations of spirituality. Advocates for spiritual
awareness as a guiding principle in life.
John Trent , Rick Osborne, Kurt Bruner (eds),
Parents’ Guide to the Spiritual Growth of Children, Wheaton, IL:

Though focused on Christian Biblical teachings, the various suggestions for
engaging children in spiritual awareness and religious teachings are simple
and well-conceived.

Crop circles have appeared in many countries. In England they have
received a lot of attention and have been increasing in their complexity
annually. No one knows how they are formed. Many are far too large and
complex to be the creation of hoaxters. Some speculate that they are
messages from a higher intelligence, challenging our comprehension.
