In March of this year [1993], during a business trip to Russia, I decided one day to visit the Scientific and Research Centre of Traditional People's Medicine in Moscow.  I had met Professor Yakov Galperin, its director, during the Doctor-Healer Network conference last October in London.

  It was quite an experience to walk from the metro station, about twenty minutes through a snowstorm, to the Centre in a quite suburb of Moscow at No. 72 Krasnobogatyrskaya Avenue (Avenue of the Magnificent Knights).  I found a two storey building crowded with visitors, most of them patients.  An exceptional warmth of human exchanges was palpable between these many patients and the personnel of the Centre - doctors, healers, administrators and other assistants.

  Professor Galperin, a little surprised at my visit, welcomed me warmly to his office and immediately called in Olga Borisoglebskaya and Mrs. Lilia Pletioukhina, their charming translator - both of whom I had also met at the London conference.

  Professor Galperin explained the functioning of the Centre.  This is now a completely autonomous organisation, functioning with its own resources.  It has about 100 healers and employees, working in Moscow and more than thirty satellites located in various towns, including Rostov on Don, Ryazan, Vladivostok, Novosibirsk, Alma-Ata.  In all of these centres people can be attended by traditional medicine practitioners as well as chiropractors, bioenergy therapists (healers), herbalists, acupuncturists, hypnotists, clairvoyants and even chiromancers (palm readers) specialised in medical diagnostics.

  There are strict rules in order to maintain a level of quality:

  1.  All practitioners must be tested scientifically to establish the range and degree of their abilities.  [Healers are tested in contact and distant diagnosis and extrasensory perception, i.e. differentiation of states of live objects such as cells, cellular and bacterial cultures, etc.]*

  2.  All practitioners who have recognised gifts must have a good basic knowledge of medicine and anatomy.

  3.  Every patient coming to the Centre must be examined by a consulting medical doctor, generally a professor with a speciality in medicine.  After this, patients are referred for treatment by various therapists appropriate to their of problems.

  4.  All therapists are supervised by medical doctors and their efficacy is evaluated scientifically.  Since the healers and other therapists participate in scientific research, in general they do not have any problem with the medical establishment and its methods.

  The Centre does not make any advertisement.  [We believe it is incorrect to advertise our achievements with the purpose of attracting new patients.]*  The cost of an entire treatment cannot exceed a minimum monthly salary [including foreigners]*.

  Professor Galperin explained that their approaches are based on the concept of what they call Energy and Information Exchange in Nature or in Medicine, 'ENIO', and on the ability of each healer to perceive the signals emitted by any live object.  They believe in a super-intelligence which contains all the information existing in the universe, often identified as God.

  When I expressed my surprise at hearing about this concept of God, which was prevalent during the times of communism, Professor Galperin smiled towards his friends, Olga and Lilia, as though I had understood nothing about the reality of the spiritual consciousness of the peoples of Russia during these times.

  Then he went on, explaining that each person, as a part of this global net of energy and information, can receive or perceive the information of another person or of any other living part of the universe through an appropriate meditating and tuning process.  During this process the healer acts as an activated conductor.  This may explain some of the seemingly miraculous healings.

  Professor Galperin related that sometimes the healers can cure people who are beyond the help of conventional medicine and told they have only a limited time to live.  He gave some examples.

  A young girl with leukaemia was so weak that she could not walk any more.  Her mother brought her to the Centre, where she was treated by a healer.  [After six session she could walk again.  After ten more sessions, her blood became quite normal.  This surprised the doctors, as she was having no other treatment at that time.]*

  A woman with a breast tumour of 19 cm. diameter was operated and treated with chemotherapy.  After surgery an ulcer appeared at the site of the tumour.  Conventional medical treatment over eighteen months was without benefit.  The ulcer worsened and she was told she would probably die very shortly.  She was brought to the Centre [and treated for two months by the healer L. S. Osipova.  Now the ulcer has cicatrised (closed and left a scar) and the patient has revived.  Since January 1993 she feels well]* and is happy.

  The day before my visit, Professor Galperin was informed that in the satellite clinic of Ashkabad in Turkmenistan a pilot was found on routine examination to have stones [in his gallbladder on X-rays]* and therefore forbidden to fly.  By chance he met the healer Ataiev and his son, also a healer, receiving three treatments from them.  After some days the stones, which were very large and sharp, were evacuated through his intestine.

  I conversed with various healers in the Centre and observed their treatments over several hours.  Let me share several observations.

  Sergueii Berbitski utilises a complex method which is a mixture of massages, chiropractic, hypnosis and oil and herbal treatments.  He comes from Ukrainia, where he used to help his grandfather, who was a famous healer.  When I visited him in his room he was treating a patient with polyarteritis in the toes of a foot.  There was soft music and candle lights, one of them on the back of the patient.  Lilia, the translator, helped explain that Verbitski removes the bad energies from patients and burns them immediately with the candle.  He has such a strong energy in his hands that when he places them near a glass of water and concentrates he is able to make the water boil in two or three minutes.  This process was scientifically observed and analyses by physicists and chemists, who found that the molecular composition of the water had changed after treatment.  [At the International Centre of Nuclear Research in Dubna, one of the scientific bases of our Centre, it was demonstrated that after two to three minutes of concentration Sergey can raise the water temperature in a glass by several dozens of degrees and impart new physical properties to the water.  The pH was changed.  This experiment was described in the scientific article by Barashenkov and  Galperin.]*
 
  I visited Dr. Selivanov, a neurologist and chiropractor.  He treats patients with spinal column and blood pressure problems.

  Nicolai Jiganov specialises in diagnosis of illness and nutritional deficiencies through palm readings and observation of the physical characteristics of nails and fingers.

  My last, long conversation was with Olga Borisoglebskaya.  Olga became a healer after a period of intense prayers for the recovery of her little son, who at that time was dying of a desperate case of eczema covering 90 percent of his body.  Now she can heal extensive burns and other illnesses with mental meditation and concentration, often with patients who are a distances of hundreds or even thousands of kilometres.

  Olga explained that she participated in several experiments in which it was verified scientifically that she could make very accurate diagnoses of illness of patients located in Vladivoskok, while she was standing in a room in Moscow, about 8,000 kilometres away.  [This was conducted and described by experts of the Russian magazine Nature and Man.]*

  We ended our conversations with mention of the International conference scheduled by the Centre for five days at the end of August 1993, with the participation of the Academy of Information Sciences.
