Sit down before fact like a little child, and be prepared to give up every preconceived notion, follow humbly wherever and to whatever abysses Nature leads, or you shall learn nothing T. H. Huxley
David was a 43 year old, normally very fit, high powered business executive. Although he had done Autogenic Training with me for stress management, he was still very sceptical about other forms of complementary therapy, especially healing.
He rang me out of the blue one day because he had severely damaged his back by lifting a heavy object and asked me to try healing on him. He complained of severe lower backache and right sciatica (pain extending down the leg). He walked with a severe limp, dragging his right foot and necessitating the use of a stick. He had marked restriction of all spinal movements, especially flexion and extension. His right SLR (tendon reflex) was about 20 degrees and he had marked paraesthesiae and hypoalgesia (decreased sensation)of L3-5 and S1 (lower back) nerve root region in his leg and foot.
His MRI scan showed that he had a complete prolapse of his L4-5 disc and partial collapse of the ones above and below, with severe compression of his right sciatic nerve. The consultant wanted him admitted immediately for emergency laminectomy. David was unwilling to accept that offer because of business commitments.
I administered healing once weekly. In addition, he continued with his Autogenic relaxation exercises regularly between sessions. Following the first two treatments, there was only a moderately small decrease in his level of pain, although he was able to drive to his third session and walked in without a stick. He still had the limp and neurological deficits.
During our usual chat following his third session, he seemed very perplexed. He was convinced that he had felt two pairs of hands working on him - one pair on his back in addition to mine on his legs.
This is an inexplicable phenomenon that some healees experience, although the majority associate their healing with perceptions of light.
Following this session his backache disappeared completely and by the time I saw him a week later, all his neurological deficits had also gone and his back movements and SLR had also returned to normal. The consultant who was David at that time for his review was completely amazed by his recovery, as he had been expecting David to be brought into the room in a wheelchair. Despite this unexpected recovery, the consultant would not authorise a repeat MRI scan on account of cost. So I do not know if there were any corresponding radiological changes. (It really does not matter, but it would have satisfied my own curiosity!)
This happened almost three years ago and David has not had any more backache despite carrying on quite normally, including working in his own garden.
This dramatic healing is not typical. The recovery and remission in the majority of similar cases, though as satisfactory, are much more gradual.
Acute and chronic back problems and other joint and musculoskeletal problems seem to do particularly well in my hands. I normally give healing with the healee sitting on a chair, leaving their back exposed. With backache, especially with sciatica, I usually have clients lying down. I tend to give healing in the aura (with my hands in the energy field a few inches away from the body) but I also touch the affected areas from time to time if that feels appropriate. I tend to give healing to the whole individual, usually going along acupuncture meridians. Towards the end of a session I work on the feet for a few minutes, and finish off with holding the individual's head for a while and then balancing the chakras (energy centres along the midline of the body).
The duration of each healing is 45-60 minutes. I allow another 30-45 minutes for the all important chat either before or after the healing. The healing itself is done in silence. Frequency of treatments to complete resolution varies between 1-6 weeks, usually correlated with the severity and chronicity of the condition. The maximum benefit commonly occurs between the third and fourth weeks, as in the above example.
I always instruct healees in simple healing light meditation so that they can give themselves healing between our sessions.
