Brathovde, Angela. Reiki for Self-Care of Nurses and Healthcare Providers. Holist Nurs Pract 2006, 20(2), 95–101.
The purpose of this study was to determine if Reiki energy therapy, level I, was taught as a self-care practice to healthcare providers, would their caring perceptions change? Methodological triangulation technique, including a self-report caring scale and interviews, was used, demonstrating positive changes in perceptions of participants’ caring behaviors.

Hall Gueldner, Sarah/ Michel, Yvonne/ Hains Bramlett, Martha/ Liu, Chin-Fang/ Johnston, Linda W./ Endo, Emiko/ Minegishi, Hideko/ Searcy Carlyle, Mable. The Well-Being Picture Scale: A Revision of the Index of Field Energy. Nursing Science Quarterly January 2005, 18(1), 42-50.
This paper reports the development and psychometric properties of the Well-Being Picture Scale, a 10-item non language based pictorial scale that measures general well-being, based on Martha Rogers’ view of human beings as energy fields in continual mutual process with their environment. The Well-Being Picture Scale was designed for use with the broadest possible range of adult populations, including persons who are unable to respond to English based text or lengthy, complex measurement instruments. Psychometric properties were established in a sample of more than 2,000 individuals from the United States, Taiwan, Japan, and Africa. The overall Cronbach’s alpha is .8795.

Henderson, Russell. Energy Psychology in Psychotherapy - Molecular Healing. Positive Health October 2005 16-19.
Abstract
Energy Psychology, Meridian Based Psychotherapy. Energy Medicine. Vibrational Medicine, etc., is as old as mankind itself- the energetic paradigm utilized in this modality, is the same as Reiki, Acupuncture systems and theory, and Chakra Philosophy. It has its roots embedded in the ancient healing arts, such as Ayurvedic Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tibetan Medicine, to name but a few. Modern science and its increasing ability to understand through valid research the functioning of the human psyche/soma, is confirming what the healing arts of antiquity have been saying for millennia: current researchers into the bio-energy arena are seeing that the human species could be regarded as 'liquid crystal under tension, capable of vibrating at different frequencies, some in the range of visible light.

Vitale, Anne T./ O’Connor, Priscilla C. The Effect of Reiki on Pain and Anxiety in Women With Abdominal Hysterectomies A Quasi-experimental Pilot Study. Holist Nurs Pract 2006, 20(6), 263–272.
The purpose of this pilot study was to compare reports of pain and levels of state anxiety in 2 groups of women after abdominal hysterectomy. A quasi-experimental design was used in which the experimental group (n = 10) received traditional nursing care plus three 30-minute sessions of Reiki, while the control group (n = 12) received traditional nursing care. The results indicated that the experimental group reported less pain and requested fewer analgesics than the control group. Also, the experimental group reported less state anxiety than the control group on discharge at 72 hours postoperation. The authors recommend replication of this study with a similar population, such as women who require nonemergency cesarian section deliveries.

Vitale, Anne. The Use of Selected Energy Touch Modalities as Supportive Nursing Interventions Are We There Yet? Holist Nurs Pract 2006, 20(4), 191–196.
There is growing interest among nurses in complementary therapies that are noninvasive, do not rely on expensive technology, and are holistic in focus. Besides the use of therapeutic touch, nurses are exploring other energy touch therapies, such as Reiki. This article examines the status of selected energy therapies and progress made toward nursing intervention utilization, including recommendations for nursing education applicable for 21st-century nursing practice.
