Valerie Hunt           

Dr. Valerie Hunt is a scientist from California, trained and experienced in research in Biology, Psychology and Electrophysiology.  She is also a healer and able to perceive the energy fields around living things.
     Dr. Hunt has been researching aspects of energy medicine for over two decades, having been challenged to do this by several healers who demonstrated diagnostic and healing treatment abilities which she could not explain through conventional theoretical models.
     Her own self healing from polio fifteen years ago added to her personal awareness and development.  One of her legs was severely wasted.  With visualisations and healing energy work she was able to overcome her disability, regenerating nerves and muscles.
     Dr. Hunt has since then developed the ability to give healing through direct interventions, such as removing anaesthesia after surgery.  This enables a person to waken more quickly and without the usual grogginess which keeps them bed-ridden for several days.  She also learned to help people find healings through seeking out the root causes behind illness.  She helps people to unlock memories of traumas which lay buried for many years, having led them to cripple themselves with illnesses as their bodies were locked into defensive patterns of functioning.
     Dr. Hunt complimented the UK Doctor-Healer Network (which hosted her visit to the UK) on its development of collaborations between healers and conventional medical therapists.  She pointed out that new awarenesses such as those of energy medicine tend to go through several stages as they are discovered by conventional medicine.  First they are ridiculed, as they appear to be exaggerations and contradictions to what is 'known'.  Then they are tolerated,  which is the stage we are in now in the UK.  Next, they are considered to be natural and are absorbed into common practice.
     We have conceptual difficulties with energy medicine today because modern science decided in its infancy that chemistry is the best model for understanding the world.   This was an advance over previous theories and produced great progress in comprehending and manipulating the environment.  We have come to understand biological functions at the levels of ions, chemicals, enzymes, hormones, immune mechanisms, genetics and more.  We have developed marvellous medications for a variety of illnesses.  However, chemistry-based medicine is limited to a dense level of energetic manifestation.  Though energy in its denser form can be analysed as matter, with chemistry explaining its component atoms and molecules and how they interact, there remain many diseases which have no explanations or adequate treatments under this conventional approach.  Energy medicine takes us to more subtle levels of energies which organise and influence the worlds of inanimate and animate things.  This is highly important in the management of states of health and disease, many of which are beyond the understandings possible with the limitations of chemistry.
    The past century has seen us begin moving in this direction through psychological understanding of the development of illnesses.  Conventional medicine recognises that tensions, especially chronic ones, may influence the neurohormonal systems and can alter the body sufficiently to make it ill.  However, the mechanistic approach to mind says that the mind is in the brain, which itself is a bunch of chemicals.  Under this theory, we should be able to understand the mind if we sort out its biochemical processes.
    One of the most inspiring books Dr. Hunt knows is The Mystery of the Human Mind, by Wilder Penfield.  Dr. Penfield was a neurosurgeon who pioneered the mapping of parts of the brain which control various parts of the body.  Yet when he came to speak of the mind, he stated: "It is the mind which experiences and it is the brain which records."
     This is most important in our appreciation of energy medicine.  The mind is in the energy field.  It is not in the brain.  There is no place in the brain where one can put in an electrode and stimulate it and get creativity, personality or spirituality.  There are some who claim that these aspects of being are qualities of the totality of the brain, but Dr Hunt says they are wrong.  The brain merely co-ordinates and records biological functions.  It does not originate them.
     A good example is how people react when they are in coma.  Dr. Hunt, in her capacity as a healer, treated many people in coma.  In this state, she finds that their minds are still intact and aware, although their bodies are not responsive and their minds are not communicating through their bodies.  Just by being with them, one can have communication with them.  One may speak with them and they will hear.
    Dr. Hunt gave several examples of people who had been in coma over long periods of time who responded to her communications with them.  She finds that a healer can help by offering them the extra energy and confidence to make a decision to either come back and live or to move on to leave the physical level of being.
    Experiences such as these have utterly convinced her that the spirit survives physical death.  They are also consistent with the memories people report of previous lives during the course of receiving healing.  Such past life experiences can contribute skills and gifts to the present life.  They may also bring with them traumatic experiences which leave the person vulnerable to particular traumas or even handicapped in their present physical existence.  Healing can release them from many of these emotional scars which may not have been worked through sufficiently in earlier lives and therefore return to plague the person in their current life.

Dr. Hunt has observed and studied healers from many parts of the world.  She has seen a native healer shout and scream at a patient's knees, wave feathers, bang drums and chant chants.  She believes that the level of spiritual development of healers is vital to their abilities to be healers.  It is the bonding between the healer and healee which brings about changes - in both.
    As a scientist she was challenged to demonstrate that healing is effective through instruments familiar to her as an electrophysiologist in the hospital wards and laboratories.  She had many years' experience with electro-cardiograms, electromyograms and electroencephalograms.  She placed electrodes on the skin of various people and analysed the squiggles they produced on the instrument graphs.  Figuring that she was dealing with subtle energies, she enlarged the smallest squiggles she could find.  Other scientists had observed these but dismissed them as random 'noise' in the instruments, assuming they came from chance environmental and physiological activities.  Dr. Hunt discovered that these squiggles reflect subtle energy states of the organism.
    She has been able to find consistent correlations between the recordings of these amplified subtle energies and states of health, disease, emotional conditions, and the like.  She can identify particular patterns from a recording when a patient has bowel dysfunctions, pain, is spiritually developed, and more.
    She also finds that these instrument readouts correlates with subjective images.  A person may visualise a particular colour and this will appear as a specific reading on her graphs.  This has confirmed for her that the mind influences the biological energy field.
    Dr. Hunt has also developed a way to produce videotapes of the biological energy field.  She finds that these are very similar to those which she and other sensitives perceive naturally - as halos of colours around objects which reflect their condition.  For instance, a person who is eating junk food will have a dull, very limited energy field.  The same person eating health foods will have a robust, colourful aura.  Dr. Hunt's stunning videotapes show also how the aura changes with physical activities, meditation, interactions between several people and between a man and his dog.
    Dr. Hunt has gone further.  She has studied the new science of chaos patterns.  This discovery of mathematics has proved a key to understanding the lawfulness of what appear to be chance, chaotic events - such as the weather, epidemiological rates of outbreaks of diseases, and numerous physiological functions within the body.  Dr. Hunt believes that disease and degeneration have chaotic patterns which override the normal patterns of subtle energies which govern the body.  Each disease has its characteristic fields.  Now it takes only a minute input of energy in a chaotic system to alter it.  Dr. Hunt believes that healing provides this energy, which then allows the body's normal patterns to reassert themselves and return the organism to health.
     The science of chaos has also helped Dr. Hunt to appreciate the validity of her own and of other healers' impressions that every individual is unique.  Variability within the individual is also normal, rather than a sign of ill health.  For instance, if blood pressure is variable, it allows the person to adapt better to different situations than if it is rigidly stable - even though the stability might be in the statistically 'normal' range of blood pressures.
     Chaos patterns 'drop gentle rain on unruly systems.'  Chaos theory explains why Dr. Hunt's data does not fit into conventional patterns of interrelation studies.  Correlation studies presume a geometrical template for the world.  While geometrical models may help analyse certain data from a limited range of phenomena, geometrical models are limited.  They cannot deal properly with chaotic patterns, which are present in much of the world.
     The amazing thing about energy medicine is that it allows the healer to access the entirety of the patient's being simultaneously.  Within the person this is facilitated by the person's own energy field.  Information from their energy field is transformed into physical information through the neuropeptides which communicate with organs and tissues throughout the body.
      It is difficult in a few words to begin to convey the exciting discoveries and theories developed by this brilliant scientist.  We can only hope that she will find the funding to continue and to publish her work.
