A VISION OF THE DOCTOR AS HEALER IN A BETTER WORLD

Dr Craig Brown

...Look for the kingdom within and all without shall be transformed...
Ken Carey - The Starseed Transmissions

My vision of the doctor in a 'better world' is that he or she will be a healer - the healing that is to make whole and to bring into balance.

The doctor will start this healing process with himself, which will influence his family, friends and community he lives in.  People will seek his help (called patients), and he shall help them in their endeavours to become well.  His vision of wholeness and balance will include all living things and matter, with the purpose that the world will be in harmony and peace.

Four Stages of Training the Doctor:  Men and women who wish to become doctors will seek out instruction in places of learning.  Wise women and men at these places will teach them in the Art of Medicine.  The students will observe these people at work and learn their ways.

In the first stage these wise women and men will teach the students to find peace in their own being, and help them find the great stillness and silence within themselves.  Their inner voice will be their guide and source of wisdom.  This discipline will be taught every day of their training, and continued every day for the rest of their lives.

This difficult first lesson in self-discipline will result in many leaving and only a few pursuing their vocation as doctors.  Those that leave will be given support and guidance in their future way.  They will not be forgotten and will be encouraged to pursue whatever they feel best for themselves, and indeed will be welcomed with open arms if they wish to apply again to become doctors.

In the second stage students who now remain will be thirsty for knowledge and will avail themselves of the great libraries of the land to learn about diseases and medicine.  They will wander through physiology, anatomy and chemistry as their interests take them.  They will delve into history, philosophy and ecology.  Their excitement will bubble over and they will share this enthusiasm with their friends.  some days they will tire of learning and will take themselves out into the country to refresh themselves.  Bathing in the lakes, climbing in the mountains, walking in the woods, anything to clear their heads of facts and get back in touch with themselves and Mother Earth.  Then back to their colleges again with a renewed passion to learn more about their Art of Medicine.

In the third stage, after some years, these students will feel the need to put into practice what they have learned.  They will seek out the Masters of their Art.  They will become apprentices to these great men and women, learning their skills in diagnosis, medicinal prescription, surgery and counselling.  But more importantly, the great mystery of Healing of the Spirit will begin to reveal itself.  They will begin to perceive that behind each action of their masters there is a spiritual purpose.  When the patient's spirit is blocked it is then freed and allowed to continue its course.  When the patient's spirit is low it is energised so it can carry on its path with purpose.  When there is a crisis this can be taken as an opportunity to change.  When death occurs it is understood as a completion before the next cycle.  It may take many years to learn of these mysteries, but one day an inner voice will tell them to move on.

In the fourth stage, as their teaching is nearing completion, not many go straight into practice.  Most have a wish to go out into the world to broaden their perspective of life.  Many travel to far off lands to learn about different cultures.  Some seek out the shamans of these countries.  Others work with the peasants and gain great understanding from them.

Then, one day, someone approaches the student and says, "Doctor, can you help to heal me?"  He realises in an instant that now he has been called to his profession.  He is now a doctor and a healer.  Now he must go out to help to relieve the suffering in the world.

Dr Craig Brown is a GP who has a healer, Del Ralph, working with him in his surgery in Rustington.  Dr Brown is exploring dimensions of spirituality in treatment in General Practice.
